2004 Collings 000-1A Sunburst Guitar 'Sold'

Excellent original condition. High grade Mahogany coupled with "AAA" grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. This guitar looks beautiful, sounds beautiful and plays great. Long scale length (25.4"), "000" size guitar with slotted headstock and 12-fret neck joint. This combination of spec's causes the bridge to be positioned a little bit further down on the guitar top, which makes for a timbre and tone that is highly desirable, as the bridge and bridgeplate interact differently with the braces.
"Shaded" sunburst top, special 'faux tortoise' pickguard, Waverly tuners. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Ebony bridge pins and endpin, with bone saddle and nut. 1 3/4" width of fingerboard at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing at bridge.

Traditional "L-00" shape with deluxe option - fully bound guitar, with multiple Ivoroid bindings around top and back edge, along fingerboard and around headstock, as well as end wedge. Small graduated pearl dot inlays in fingerboard. Nickel Schaller mini tuners. Tortoise pickguard. Straight rectangular bridge with boxed intonated bone saddle. Spruce top and ivoroid bindings are antique'd.
Everything is intact and in great shape, but there are a few random dings and mars around the top and back. Sides are unscathed. Back of neck is very nice. Peghead face is nice. Back of peghead has chip in lacquer at top edge. Bridge shows slight signs of prior removal and regluing. Frets look brand new from recent milling.
A new Collings C-10 DeLuxe Rosewood with German top would cost you around $4650 today. This one is a lot more affordable if you can live with a few dings and light dents. The tone is excellent. Very, very mature and "open" with quick response, full body and good projection. The hard case is a Santa Cruz case that fits it, but not exactly.

I really have to comment on this Mahogany, as it has especially nice grain. It shows the "rope" figure as well as flecked mottling. And... the Sitka top shows lots of character, as well.
The tone is great - fast attack, good voice, good resonance and good balance.

2010 Collings D-1 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. This guitar was well cared for and has no careless marks, no dings and no appreciable fret wear.
Honduran Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Sitka Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Small dot inlays in fingerboard. Bone nut and bone intonated saddle. Ebony bridge pins and endpin. Nickel Waverly pre-war style open-back tuners. Collings logo inlaid in headstock. Tortoise multiple bindings around body.
This is a very, very good guitar. I think in today's world many people are buying D-1A's, when the sound they are looking for is in the D-1. It has fast sharp attack, but without the "glassiness" in the attack of the D-1A's. It has depth, projection, great tone and is very powerful.
I can heartily recommend this guitar to anyone who is looking for a strong dreadnaut with a great voice that is also in great condition.

New Collings D-1 Custom Adi Bracing - No Tongue Brace Guitar 'Sold'

New. Mahogany Dreadnaut, with Adirondack Red Spruce hand-voiced advanced scalloped bracing under the Sitka Spruce top. No tongue brace.
With all the attention paid to "special" guitar tops, good old Sitka Spruce can sometimes be overlooked. This guitar proves that a good piece of Sitka Spruce makes a great guitar!
Here's the guitar: Mahogany Dreadnaut with Sitka Spruce top. Adirondack top bracing is used under the Sitka top to stiffen the top for sharper attack, and to keep a certain stiffness to the Spruce so it doesn't "mellow" out too much. We've left off the 'tongue brace' that's usually just under the fingerboard extension. Ebony peghead overlay, fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and bone compensated saddle. Ebony bridge pins and endpin. Nickel Waverly tuners. 1 11/16" width at nut.
We just received this guitar today, as I write this ... I have played it enough already to know that it is a hot guitar. *When we sell Collings Mahogany dreadnauts, we've noticed that if the buyer comes to the store and plays everything, they are more likely to buy the Sitka D-1 instead of the Adirondack D-1A. The reason is the Sitka D-1's sound so great and so "open" and are $800-$1000 less than the Adirondack D-1A. In other words, when you just use your ears, and also factor in the costs, many people will buy a D-1 over a D-1A. SN# 24725.
And... as with all Collings instruments, this guitar comes with an excellent US made TKL "AVS" hard case.

New Collings D-1 Custom Adirondack Braces - No Tongue Brace Guitar 'Sold'

New. Customized version of the old reliable D-1. We've tweaked the spec's just a little to yield a punchier, more aggressive version of the D-1. We've changed the usual Sitka braces to Adirondack Red Spruce braces. This change insures that the attack of each note and the overall presence of the guitar is more gritty and growly... more aggressive with more "edge". The second change is the absence of the 'tongue brace" under the top above the soundhole. This isn't the main straight brace near top of soundhole, but rather a thin flat re-inforcement piece usually installed between the front main brace and the headblock. Leaving out the tongue brace doesn't result in some fantastic increase in tonal quality or volume, but many people feel that it is a redundant brace and want it left out just for the chance that it will facilitate more sonic resonance in that area...
Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Sitka Spruce top. Adirondack scalloped hand-tuned bracing. No tongue brace. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and saddle. Nickel Waverly tuners (made in Montana). Ebony bridge pins and end pin. Collings logo inlaid in headstock, dot inlays in fingerboard. 1 11/16" nut width.
These D-1 models from Collings sell faster in our store than D-1A models. This is partly because they are $800 to $900 less than a D-1A, but we feel it is mainly because the D-1 models sound great. Remember... the Adirondack braces aren't there to make this guitar sound great - it already does. The Adirondack braces are there to ensure that the top retains a certain stiffness through time, so the attack always stays "crisp". SN #24725

1997 Collings D-1A Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(++) original condition. This guitar is in really great shape. Almost no signs of prior use, except just the lightest evidence of fretting and some very small touch marks.
Adirondack Spruce top with Mahogany back, sides and neck. 1 11/16" width at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing at bridge. Ebony fingerboard with graduated Pearl dot inlays. Nickel Waverly tuners.
Sound is very nice and fully open. It is rare to see a guitar that is so broken in from being played and tonally developed, but still in such great shape. This guitar even sounded fabulous when it arrived with very old bright bronze strings. Collings collectors realize that when these guitars are between 15 and 20 years old, you hear elements of tone in them that remind you of much older (and much more expensive) vintage Martins.
This "time capsule" guitar is really a hot one. New D-1A's are great in their own right, but the real treat is in hearing them as they age and mature. This guitar is so good that I can't think of an old 1950's or 1960's Martin D-18 that I've heard that would "beat" it in a direct comparison. In fact, at the time of this writing, the guitar that comes closest to this Collings D-1A is our 1943 Martin D-18, which is priced 5 times higher than this "vintage" Collings.

With Collings "V" (Vintage) guitars nowadays, you get to choose between the "Vintage" neck profile or the "Vintage Now" neck profile. I know... it sounds a little confusing...
The "Vintage Now" neck profile is just a little bit LESS wide and a little LESS deep, as the neck approaches the guitar body. They both start with 1 3/4" width at nut.  So, whereas some people feel the full "Vintage" neck is just too much wood in your hand, the "Vintage Now" neck isn't much more than any good neck today, but just flared a little more like a mid-30's Martin neck.
Ebony fingerboard and bridge; bone nut and saddle; Ebony bridge pins and end pin. Strap button professionally installed by us at the proper location on side of heel.
Of course, this fine D1AV has all the power and tone you expect from Collings.

2010 Collings D-1AV w/ "Vintage Now" neck profile Guitar 'Sold'

New. Here is another great example of Collings' top Mahogany Dreadnaut guitar. Known for explosive power and presence, these D-1A's are a favorite among collectors and serious players, for their high-grade materials, clean construction, and most of all for their sound power.
High grade Mahogany back, sides and neck with master grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. For me, this Red Spruce top is great - wide grain, some light red streaks, and plenty of beautiful "silk" from the medullary rays. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone saddle and nut. 1 3/4" width at nut, 2 1/4" spacing of pins at bridge. Waverly open back tuners. Graduated dot inlays in fingerboard.
The "Vintage Now" neck profile is following the earlier neck profiles by Martin from the mid-to-late 1930's. Most people are aware that Martin made some truly "giant" neck profiles during that period, with lots of wood under the fingerboard. But recent attention has centered on the fact that there was also an "in between" neck profile that utilized the same nut width and similar flaring of fingerboard as it approaches the neck, but just a little less thick and meaty feel to the neck shape. This is the shape of the "vintage now" profile - still a "full" feeling neck, but just a little more ergonomic shaping of the profile.
This is a very strong instrument.

Exc condition. Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck, with high-grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Gabon Ebony fingerboard and bridge. The "V" signifies the "Vintage Option" which includes: 1 3/4" width at nut, wider string spacing(2 5/16") at bridge, full profile back of neck, and a "cut through" bridge saddle. Upgraded cut diamond inlays in fingerboard & low-profile bone bridge pins. Speckled "CW" style pickguard. The tone is huge and expressive. There are very little signs of player wear - all in all, it is a very nice guitar, with great frets. This guitar ordered new today would cost over $4700 from Collings...

2009 Collings D-1AVN w/ "Vintage Now" Neck Profile Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(++) condition. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing at bridge. All original, with almost no signs of prior ownership. There are just a few very light "touch marks", otherwise it is in perfect shape.
Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck. Master grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Graduated pearl dot inlays in fingerboard. Nickel Waverly tuners. Bone intonated saddle and bone nut. Ebony pins.
     The "Vintage Now" neck:
This neck profile is a more ergonomic rendition of the larger neck profiles seen in many guitars from the 1930's. I have a 1939 Martin D-18 with a very similar neck profile to this. According to Martin, one of Del McCoury's original late 1930's Martin guitars also has this "in-between" profile. The fingerboard does "flare" a bit as it approaches the body, but just not as much as the full "Vintage" profile. There is a little more wood behind the fingerboard, just not the full "baseball bat" heft as some of the mid-'30's Martins had.
This guitar is a fine one - all the snap and boom, but just a little more opened-up than a brand new one. The discounted price for a NEW Collings D-1AVN like this one is $4297. This one is already on its way to maturing and opening up, and is selling for several hundred less...
This guitar is all set-up to play and sounds really great. Very strong punch, clear and clean attack, and great balance all the way up and down the neck.

New Collings D-1V Adirondack Spruce Braces Guitar 'Sold'

New. Mahogany Dreadnaut with Sitka Spruce top and Adirondack Red Spruce bracing under the top. No tongue brace. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing in bridge. "Vintage Now" neck option, which means the neck isn't the huge "Vintage" neck, but a slightly slimmer version like Martin did around 1938 and 1939. This neck is more full feeling, but not the huge 'baseball bat' neck profile. The fingerboard flares slightly wider as you approach the body.
The Adirondack Spruce braces are employed to add a certain amount of stiffness to the Sitka top for more tonal definition and punch as the top opens-up over time.
Guitar has just arrived from Collings - please give us a little time for photos and sound samples.

Herringbone purflings around top, with outer multiple ivoroid bindings around top and back edge. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and saddle. Ebony pins. Nickel Waverly tuners.
Usually we have been ordering 'straight' D-2H guitars from Collings, with Sitka tops and Sitka bracing... But we've heard very nice results from Sitka Spruce mated with Adirondack Red Spruce braces. The idea is for the Spruce top to retain a little more stiffness, so that as it "breaks-in" or "opens-up", it doesn't lose the cutting power.

New Collings D-2HAV Red Spruce Top & "Vintage Now" Neck Guitar 'Sold'

Another Collings with the great "Vintage Now" neck. These profiles are the "gentleman's version" to the old "Vintage" necks which were copies of the big, full necks that mid-'30's Martins employed. This newer profile is still using the 1 3/4" width at nut, and still flares the fingerboard as it approaches the body, just not quite as much. It also has a slightly wider pin spacing at bridge - just not quite as much as full "Vintage" option has. Likewise, the profile on back of neck has slightly less "meat" then the full "Vintage" profile does.
Beautiful and powerful guitar! Indian Rosewood back and sides, with Mahogany neck. Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and saddle, with Ebony end pin and bridge pins. Waverly nickel tuners.
This is typical of Collings, being very strong even as a day-old guitar. We'll have photos if it doesn't sell before we can take them...

New Collings D-2HAV Bearclaw Red Spruce top Guitar 'Sold'

New Collings Rosewood body Dreadnaut with Bearclaw Adirondack Red Spruce top, Mahogany neck and Gabon Ebony fingerboard and bridge. 1 3/4" nut width combined with Collings' "Vintage Now" neck. This means the neck does flare out toward the bridge, but only about half-way toward the real wide 1937 Martin fingerboards. This is a close dimension to Del McCoury's original Martin neck. Not only is the fingerboard not quite flared as 'wide', the neck is a little beefier than a standard neck today but not quite as 'thick' as a 1937 'big' Martin neck. Many players in our store call this a 'perfect' neck profile, so naturally we have begun to order lots of them from Collings.
This D-2HAV has the usual appointments - Wooden herringbone purflings around top edge of body, with multiple ivoroid bindings showing on outside edge of top and back. Nickel Waverly tuners. Ebony end pin and bridge pins. Bone saddle and nut. Rosewood back has traditional marquetry strip down center seam.
Talk about 'real' sound... this guitar has it.
Crisp attack and full balanced tone. It will quickly fill a room with beautiful sound.

New Collings D-2HBaaaA - AAA Brazilian and Red Spruce Guitar 'Sold'

This is an exceedingly rare guitar nowadays from Collings. This guitar is just now coming to us, though we ordered it two years ago from Collings. This demonstrates how scarce and precious the highest grades of Brazilian Rosewood have become. The folks at Collings tell us that future orders of "AAA" Brazilian guitars will come with quite a higher price tag than this one...
1 11/16" width at nut. Especially beautiful "AAA" grade Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, that show off quarter-sawn grain with added "maiden hair" figure. Some luthiers grade this wood "Master Grade" because of the added beauty of the figured wood as well as having great color and quarter-sawn orientation. Master grade Adirondack Red Spruce top that shows off lots of medulary rays.
Grained ivoroid bindings on top and back, with Herringbone top purfling. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Waverly open back tuners (made in Montana, by the way). As with all Collings guitars, you get an excellent bone saddle and nut and Ebony bridge pins and endpin.
Typical of Collings tonal consistency, this guitar came to us sounding great... yet we know that whoever is savvy enough to buy this guitar will have the rare treat of hearing it open up further, maturing in tone and expression over the coming years to even another level of greatness.

This is a wonderful guitar. Indian Rosewood back and sides, with very high-grade German Spruce top. Mahogany neck. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Brazilian Rosewood peghead overlay. Bone nut and saddle. 1 3/4" width of fingerboard at nut.
As good as the Collings guitars are with Adirondack Red Spruce tops are, we feel that these German Spruce top examples are much more open to start with. In other words, you don't have to play away the sharpness of the Adirondack sound waiting for it to 'round off a bit'.
Extremely full sound with just the right "bite" to the attack. This is really a great instrument - it is hard to put it down after you start to play it.

New. Indian Rosewood back and sides, with select German Spruce top.
German Spruce has been our preferred wood choice on Indian Rosewood Collings guitars for a few years now. We like it for many reasons. It sounds so "open" very quickly, instead of long months waiting for harder Adirondack Red Spruce to open up. German Spruce also imparts a lovely "growly" sound that is fresh and woody sounding with lots of character... and, it costs $400 LESS than Red Spruce. We feel that German Spruce is not a tonal advantage over German Spruce in the D-2H and OM-2H guitars.
Ivoroid multiple bindings on back of body, ivoroid binding with wooden Herringbone purfling along inside of top edge.
Be the first on your block to try one and watch your friends be amazed at the great sound...

New Collings D-3 Brazilian Guitar 'Sold'

Adirondack red Spruce top, "A" grade Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Abalone sound hole rosette. Bound fingerboard. Multiple bound body and headstock. Gold Waverly tuners. 1 11/16" fingerboard width. Getting a Brazilian guitar from Collings is incredibly difficult these days. We were lucky to have had several ordered before Collings cut off new Brazilian orders in 2007.
*Our usual practice has been to order Collings Brazilian guitars with "AAA" grade woods. But lately, with the diminishing supply of these Brazilian sets, we are working with Collings to choose appropriate sets of slightly lower grade Brazilian  in order to get a supply of guitars.
Grade of "AAA" usually means that visually it is even-colored and even-grained, with predominant quarter-sawn grain orientation.
Grade of "AA" can mean mostly quarter-sawn but with color blotches, or it can mean partially quarter-sawn.
Grade of "A" can mean some quarter-sawn straight grain, but with color blotches, like this D-3 has.
Our new D-3 has predominantly straight-grain wood in center of back, then leans toward flat-sawn wood at wider parts. It also has darker streaks in the wood.
"Sound-wise"... this guitar has every bit of the presence and power that you come to expect from Collings Brazilian Dreadnauts.

Ebony fingerboard with small dot inlay. Waverly pre-war style open-back tuners. Bone saddle and nut. Ebony bridge pins and end pin. Body bound with tortoise, with multiple lines showing on top edge. Ebony peghead overlay.
D1A guitars seem to be one of those instruments that I hear people regularly commenting on, saying things like, 'one day I'm gonna get one of those'... Or, 'wow, that thing is a powerhouse guitar'. All you have to do to hear it for yourself is to sit down with one for a little while and play it.
This one is very strong, with all the cutting power you need, the depth and presence, and clear beautiful tone. Nobody will ever state that Mahogany guitars can be thin sounding when this guitar is in the room.

Exc(+) condition. Quite nice condition with no dings or dents and no fret wear. There are 2 or 3 of the tiniest touch-marks on the Spruce top, but even I have a hard time finding them.
Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck with Adirondack Red Spruce top. 1 3/4" width at nut. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Beautiful light sunburst top. Bone nut and saddle. Ebony bridgepins and endpin.
The Red Spruce top shows typical wide grain transition to tight grain in center of top.
This is a very nice playing guitar. We just got it in and put a fresh set of med phosphor-bronze strings on it and it sounds great - very enunciated and full. We don't get many 2 year old D1A guitars in here and its always a treat when we do, because we get to hear them after the 'sharpness' of the Adirondack Red Spruce top has eased up a bit.
If you are looking for a good used Collings, this may be the one for you. The same guitar sells new for over a thousand dollars more than our price on this fine example.

New Collings D1AV w/ "Vintage Now" Neck Guitar 'Sold'

This is the venerable 'bone shaker' Mahogany Dreadnaut from Collings. Built with choice Mahogany back, sides and neck, and highest grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Ebony pins. Bone saddle and nut. Waverly vintage style open-back tuners.
Dreadnaut guitars from Collings are available with several choices for fingerboard width at nut and also for profile of the neck.
Collings tends to really "dial in" the feel of a 1 3/4" nut width, causing it to feel 'right', even to many players who do not seek a wider neck.
The "Vintage Now" neck profile means that the pin spacing at bridge is slightly wider than standard, but not quite as wide as a mid-'30's Martin Dreadnaut had.
Again - this compromise allows the feel to be shifted to what some would feel to be an advantage in playing comfort, without pushing it all the way to what many consider to be 'too much'.
Because of these things working so well, we have many customers who have proclaimed it the 'ideal neck' for feel.

New Collings D1AVN Guitar 'Sold'

New. Really, what can I say about a guitar like this...? If you are reading this, you probably already know Collings' guitars, and possibly have played and heard a D-1A.
If you already are familiar with these models, you don't need to be told about their tone and power and projection.
If you are not familiar with them, please read on:
D-1A's have established themselves as one of the hottest flatpicking guitars ever designed and built. They deliver a crisp, bold attack, with plenty of "boom" in the lower register. They have depth to balance the clear, clean highs.
When brand new, these Adirondack top D-1A's sound great, but after a few months of being "alive", they begin to open up tremendously, with the attack changing to be more full and less strident. After one year they are on their way to being fully opened-up, but it is really after about 2 years that you begin to hear the guitar sounding more like a true vintage sound than a new guitar.
Seriously... I rank these guitars in highest category of Mahogany Dreadnaut, and cannot think of a rival guitar that out performs them.
High grade Mahogany back, sides and neck. "AAA" Adirondack Red Spruce top with very wide grain lines throughout. Ebony fingerboard and bridge and peghead overlay. Graduated pearl dot inlays in fingerboard. Nickel Waverly tuners. Bone nut and intonated saddle.
The designation, "VN", means "Vintage Now" neck profile. This means that this guitar has 1 3/4" width at nut and also has a slightly larger neck profile in your hands. The neck isn't really thick, because the "Vintage Now" profile is close to a 1930's and 1940's Martin profile that was 'in-between' the really wide and thick necks and the later slimmer necks from around 1940 and on.

New Collings D2HA Brazilian Rosewood Guitar 'Sold'

It is extremely hard to get these "AAA" Brazilian Rosewood dreadnauts from Collings in the last 2 years. We were lucky in that we had a track record with Collings for ordering these fine guitars from them over the previous years, and were on order for several of them when they anounced a moratorium on new Brazilian orders. So, this guitar was actually ordered over 2 years ago.
This guitar has many of the great options that make them so enjoyable to play: 1 3/4" width at nut; "Vintage now" neck and bridge option, which flares the fingerboard like pre-war guitars, but just not as wide as the widest ones;  2 1/4" pin spacing at the bridge; Waverly open-back tuners; Bone nut and saddle, and Ebony bridge pins and end pin. And, of course, the excellent quarter-sawn "AAA" grade Brazilian and Adirondack Red Spruce.
The "usual" D-2HA appointments are also here, like the wooden herringbone purfling around top, multiple ivoroid/black/ivoroid bindings on top and back, Ebony fingerboard and bridge.
Same great Brazilian dreadnaut we always order from Collings and they always deliver - great woods, great tone. Makes you forget all about mortgaging your house for a '30's Herringbone.

Exceptional original condition. NO wear! NO signs of prior ownership. Select Indian Rosewood back and sides with high-grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Waverly nickel open back tuners. Bone saddle and nut, Ebony bridge pins and end pin.
Wooden Herringbone purflings around top edge, inside ivoroid outer bindings. Diamond volute under nut. Cut diamond inlays in fingerboard.
This guitar is just like buying one brand new. The condition is really great and the sound is great, with a big, open sound. Save around $500 buying this one rather than a brand new one.
There is a bonus feature for buying a 2-year old Collings guitar with Adirondack Red Spruce top. It takes just about 2 years for Collings dreadnaut guitars with Red Spruce to really exhibit signs of being fully "opened up"... So, purchasing this "new condition" guitar buys you a 2-year jump on the usual 'break-in' period. What this means is that the Red Spruce begins to 'round off' its sharpness of attack and settle into a more 'friendly-sounding' guitar.

Wooden herringbone purfling around top edge. Zipper backstrip in back.
You may have already read this before when looking at these guitars on our site, but we buy these with German Spruce because of the sound, not because we can't afford Adirondack. No kidding... it's a better sound combination for German Spruce with Indian Rosewood from Collings than Adirondack Spruce with Indian Rosewood. These guitars always come across as well-developed and open, even when they are only an hour old from Collings. German Spruce's active guttural, gritty, growly sound enhances the richness of the Indian Rosewood.

     New. SN# 24575.
Indian Rosewood Dreadnaut with top grade German Spruce top.
1 11/16" width at nut. Advanced, scalloped bracing that is hand-tuned to perfection. The true German Spruce top is our favorite on Collings' Rosewood Om's and Dreadnauts. German Spruce immediately gives off a textured growl that sounds as if the guitar were already 5 or 10 years old. As soon as you try one, you'll hear what we mean. So, not only does German Spruce save you about $400 or so compared to Adirondack Red Spruce, we hear it having much more "grit and growl" and expression in the Rosewood body guitars... So we like to think of these as our favorite Rosewood powerhouse guitars.
Great materials and workmanship! High grade Indian Rosewood back and sides, top grade German Spruce top, Ebony fittings, bone nut and saddle, Nickel Waverly tuners.
     * With this guitar you get very much tonal satisfaction. It has a growl like a 75-year old Martin, and it has just arrived from Collings!

Big snappy tone with great dynamics and character. Most people seem to only be able to say, "Adirondack Red Spruce top" these days. But German has enjoyed a top reputation in instruments since long before Red Spruce was used in guitar making. German Spruce yields a very satisfying "open" sound that has a seductive growl and presence. It 'opens-up' much more quickly than Adirondack Red Spruce, and to our ears actually sounds a little closer to a vintage guitar sound... and, it costs $400 less than Red Spruce. So for us, German Spruce tops are the preferred choice.

We have been ordering some of these D-2H guitars with German tops for a few years now, and have been very happy with every one. In today's excitement of ordering instruments, many people just think that Adirondack Red Spruce is the "best" tonewood for a top. This is not true at all. Red Spruce has many desirable characteristics, but so does German Spruce, Lutz Spruce, Italian Spruce, Englemann Spruce, and Sitka Spruce.
Most of today's Collings guitars made with Red Spruce require a fairly lengthy 'break-in' period because the wood is so hard and stiff (longitudinally and laterally). German Spruce, however, allows you to enjoy a more "open" sound right away, as the characteristics of the Spruce are allowing it to be more resonant more quickly.
The German Spruce Collings guitars have a very nice "growl" and "snarl" and very strong expressive highs... and gives it to you at a price $450 LOWER than if you choose Red Spruce. Don't get me wrong, I love Red Spruce... but it is impossible to ignore how great German Spruce sounds when compared to Red Spruce. Time after time here in our store we've listened to them compared to each other, and had the German Spruce guitar "win" against Red Spruce.

Discussion - Why do we opt for "Short Scale" and "German Spruce" on many of our Rosewood body Collings?
Short Scale - means strings are just a little shorter, so that they reach correct pitch with less tension than Long Scale. The Short Scale OM's seem more 'user friendly' and 'warmer' than Long Scale versions. Conversely, Long Scale versions work excellent for bare finger picking, but can sound somewhat 'harder' when using a flatpick.
German Spruce - we choose German Spruce for tops on many of our Rosewood guitars from Collings. This is because we hear greatness in the German Spruce very early in the life of guitar, as opposed to waiting years for Adirondack Red Spruce to "open up". We are choosing German Spruce because it sounds better to us.
Great wide open sound with wonderful attack.

OM with Indian Rosewood back and sides, German Spruce top with nice, silky grain. 24.9" Short Scale. 1 3/4" width at nut. Exotic stained Ebony headstock veneer. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Nickel Waverly tuners.
For most of the Collings Rosewood guitars we order, we choose German Spruce for the tops. This is done to optimize to overall tonal package and how fast it opens up for the new owner. We feel that Adirondack Red Spruce can be a great top wood, but is actually second to German when mated with some Rosewoods. The German Spruce yields a strong growl like a pre-war Martin... but also gives you the feeling that this OM is 'older' than it really is. This quick opening-up and the growly voice is why we order these one right after the other.
Sound is very good and full of character. The attack is nice and quick when fingerpicked, and the entire guitar really responds when flat-picked.

New Collings OM-2HG SS German top and Short Scale Guitar 'Sold'

New. SN: 24867. Stunningly beautiful and great-sounding short scale "Orchestra Model" (OM) from Collings, thoughtfully appointed for added tone by the House of Fine Instruments.
We've been so excited for quite a few years now with the combination of Indian Rosewood back and sides, and German Spruce tops. Even as the world's discussion groups overuse the words "Adirondack Red Spruce", we hear a much more satisfying tonality from the use of German Spruce with Indian Rosewood. This combination was first suggested to us by Collings as the tonal combination that beat Indian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce, and it does. The German Spruce adds a very satisfying "growl" and "grit" right from the start. Not only that, but it's almost as if the guitar is ready to play on stage from the day you receive it instead of waiting years for the hard Adirondack Red Spruce to open up enough to add flavor to the guitar.
Now...add 24.9" short scale to the guitar and it's very friendly, very fast. The slightly reduced tension on the strings works so well to create a small body guitar that flatpicks and fingerpicks wonderfully. And the choice of German Spruce vs. Red Spruce saves the player around $400.
Select Indian Rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, incredibly high grade German Spruce top. Ebony peghead overlay, fingerboard, and bridge. Bound with multiple ivoroid bindings around top and back of body, ivoroid heelcap, multiple ivoroid end wedge. Wooden herringbone purfling around top edge. 1 11/16" nut width. Nickel Waverly tuners (handmade in Montana). Abalone cut diamond inlays in fingerboard. Tortoise teardrop pickguard. Ebony bridge pins and endpin with pearl dot.
In closing, this is a great guitar.

New Collings Waterloo WL-14 L (Ladder Braced) Guitar 'Sold'

     New.
Beautiful wide-grained Adirondack Red Spruce top. Dealers have no choice in the wood used for the tops, so it is a "bonus" to have this top. Very nice Sunburst on the top, and single Ivoroid binding along the edge of the top. Mahogany back, sides and neck. Antiqued vintage-style tuners with Ebony buttons. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 7/16" pin spacing at bridge.
Top is ladder braced. The inside fit and finish is similar to old 1930's L-00's, and old Kalamazoo brand versions made by Gibson. The craft has been honed to the point of leaving just about the same amount of rough-cut wood and squeezed glue here and there inside the guitar.
This is the first Waterloo guitar that has come through the store, and we are impressed. The sound is reminiscent of old Gibson parlor guitars, and it already has lots of that chunky thunky 'dried out wood' tone right out of the box. Even the Waterloo logo looks like it was applied in about 1935...

New Collings Waterloo WL-14 X (X-Braced) Guitar 'Sold'

     New.
Very popular Mahogany guitar that is a very close copy of the old Gibson "Kalamazoo" versions of the old Gibson L-00. It is made so much like the originals that they are even using non-scalloped braces that are NOT hand-tuned; They even left the glue residue inside the guitar with no clean-up. The neck has cuts very reminescent to the old originals - side cuts at volute area (behind nut), and also the true "Vee" shape of neck profile. I could go on and on about the physical construction of this guitar... but that doesn't tell the whole story...
Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Spruce top. Waterloo logo on headstock. "V" neck profile. Short scale - 24.9".  1 3/4" width at nut. 3-on-a-plate openback tuners with Ebony buttons. Ebony nut. Radiused fingerboard. Ebony bridge with "cut-thru" saddle. Ebony bridge pins with 2 3/8" spacing.
The other part of the story is how the whole package fits into Collings' world so perfectly - same as it fit into the Gibson world in the 1930's. Similar sounding logo; Logo is name of town guitar is made in (Waterloo is original name for Austin, TX); same "no frills" method of building; same great sound for the money.
The sound is very exciting. Instead of the sculpted tones of most Collings guitars, you hear rough-hewn wood vibrating with excitement and a certain plaintiveness that is great. And... "for the money"... this guitar hits the spot!
