2004 Collings 000-1A Sunburst Guitar 'Sold'

Excellent original condition. High grade Mahogany coupled with "AAA" grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. This guitar looks beautiful, sounds beautiful and plays great. Long scale length (25.4"), "000" size guitar with slotted headstock and 12-fret neck joint. This combination of spec's causes the bridge to be positioned a little bit further down on the guitar top, which makes for a timbre and tone that is highly desirable, as the bridge and bridgeplate interact differently with the braces.
"Shaded" sunburst top, special 'faux tortoise' pickguard, Waverly tuners. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Ebony bridge pins and endpin, with bone saddle and nut. 1 3/4" width of fingerboard at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing at bridge.

New Collings C-10 DeLuxe Custom - Short Scale Cutaway Guitar 'Sold'

We ordered this one in for a customer. It's sold, but we just had to mention it because it is just such a fine instrument. The short scale length really adds to the tonal beauty, imparting a warmth, depth, and really "friendly" ambience to the full sound. Ordered with a Venetian cutaway and with special inlays. Indian Rosewood back and sides, with a choice piece of Spruce for the top...

New Collings D-1 Guitar 'Sold'

1 11/16" width at nut. Mahogany dreadnaut w/ Sitka Spruce top. Advanced, scalloped bracing. Everything like the D-1A, but with Sitka Spruce instead of Adirondack Red Spruce. Listening to the attack and power of these Sitka Spruce guitars will show you that Adirondack Red Spruce is simply a "choice", NOT a necessity.

Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Sitka Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Waverly open-back pre-war style tuners. Bone nut and saddle, Ebony pins. 1 11/16" width at nut.
I really have to comment on this Mahogany, as it has especially nice grain. It shows the "rope" figure as well as flecked mottling. And... the Sitka top shows lots of character, as well.
The tone is great - fast attack, good voice, good resonance and good balance.

2010 Collings D-1 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. This guitar was well cared for and has no careless marks, no dings and no appreciable fret wear.
Honduran Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Sitka Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Small dot inlays in fingerboard. Bone nut and bone intonated saddle. Ebony bridge pins and endpin. Nickel Waverly pre-war style open-back tuners. Collings logo inlaid in headstock. Tortoise multiple bindings around body.
This is a very, very good guitar. I think in today's world many people are buying D-1A's, when the sound they are looking for is in the D-1. It has fast sharp attack, but without the "glassiness" in the attack of the D-1A's. It has depth, projection, great tone and is very powerful.
I can heartily recommend this guitar to anyone who is looking for a strong dreadnaut with a great voice that is also in great condition.

Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck. Master grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Graduated pearl dot inlays in fingerboard. Nickel Waverly tuners. Bone intonated saddle and bone nut. Ebony pins.

New Collings D-1AV "Vintage Now" Neck Profile Guitar 'Sold'

New Mahogany powerhouse from Collings. Faithful to all D1A models, it has great Mahogany back, sides and neck, and also very high grade Adirondack Red Spruce top.
With Collings "V" (Vintage) guitars nowadays, you get to choose between the "Vintage" neck profile or the "Vintage Now" neck profile. I know... it sounds a little confusing...
The "Vintage Now" neck profile is just a little bit LESS wide and a little LESS deep, as the neck approaches the guitar body. They both start with 1 3/4" width at nut.  So, whereas some people feel the full "Vintage" neck is just too much wood in your hand, the "Vintage Now" neck isn't much more than any good neck today, but just flared a little more like a mid-30's Martin neck.
Ebony fingerboard and bridge; bone nut and saddle; Ebony bridge pins and end pin. Strap button professionally installed by us at the proper location on side of heel.
Of course, this fine D1AV has all the power and tone you expect from Collings.

2010 Collings D-1AV w/ "Vintage Now" neck profile Guitar 'Sold'

New. Here is another great example of Collings' top Mahogany Dreadnaut guitar. Known for explosive power and presence, these D-1A's are a favorite among collectors and serious players, for their high-grade materials, clean construction, and most of all for their sound power.
High grade Mahogany back, sides and neck with master grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. For me, this Red Spruce top is great - wide grain, some light red streaks, and plenty of beautiful "silk" from the medullary rays. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone saddle and nut. 1 3/4" width at nut, 2 1/4" spacing of pins at bridge. Waverly open back tuners. Graduated dot inlays in fingerboard.
The "Vintage Now" neck profile is following the earlier neck profiles by Martin from the mid-to-late 1930's. Most people are aware that Martin made some truly "giant" neck profiles during that period, with lots of wood under the fingerboard. But recent attention has centered on the fact that there was also an "in between" neck profile that utilized the same nut width and similar flaring of fingerboard as it approaches the neck, but just a little less thick and meaty feel to the neck shape. This is the shape of the "vintage now" profile - still a "full" feeling neck, but just a little more ergonomic shaping of the profile.
This is a very strong instrument.

2001 Collings D-1AV Left-handed Guitar 'Sold'

Exc condition. Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck, with high-grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Gabon Ebony fingerboard and bridge. The "V" signifies the "Vintage Option" which includes: 1 3/4" width at nut, wider string spacing(2 5/16") at bridge, full profile back of neck, and a "cut through" bridge saddle. Upgraded cut diamond inlays in fingerboard & low-profile bone bridge pins. Speckled "CW" style pickguard. The tone is huge and expressive. There are very little signs of player wear - all in all, it is a very nice guitar, with great frets. This guitar ordered new today would cost over $4700 from Collings...

2009 Collings D-1AVN w/ "Vintage Now" Neck Profile Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(++) condition. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing at bridge. All original, with almost no signs of prior ownership. There are just a few very light "touch marks", otherwise it is in perfect shape.
Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck. Master grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Graduated pearl dot inlays in fingerboard. Nickel Waverly tuners. Bone intonated saddle and bone nut. Ebony pins.
     The "Vintage Now" neck:
This neck profile is a more ergonomic rendition of the larger neck profiles seen in many guitars from the 1930's. I have a 1939 Martin D-18 with a very similar neck profile to this. According to Martin, one of Del McCoury's original late 1930's Martin guitars also has this "in-between" profile. The fingerboard does "flare" a bit as it approaches the body, but just not as much as the full "Vintage" profile. There is a little more wood behind the fingerboard, just not the full "baseball bat" heft as some of the mid-'30's Martins had.
This guitar is a fine one - all the snap and boom, but just a little more opened-up than a brand new one. The discounted price for a NEW Collings D-1AVN like this one is $4297. This one is already on its way to maturing and opening up, and is selling for several hundred less...
This guitar is all set-up to play and sounds really great. Very strong punch, clear and clean attack, and great balance all the way up and down the neck.

New Collings D-1V Adirondack Spruce Braces Guitar 'Sold'

New. Mahogany Dreadnaut with Sitka Spruce top and Adirondack Red Spruce bracing under the top. No tongue brace. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing in bridge. "Vintage Now" neck option, which means the neck isn't the huge "Vintage" neck, but a slightly slimmer version like Martin did around 1938 and 1939. This neck is more full feeling, but not the huge 'baseball bat' neck profile. The fingerboard flares slightly wider as you approach the body.
The Adirondack Spruce braces are employed to add a certain amount of stiffness to the Sitka top for more tonal definition and punch as the top opens-up over time.
Guitar has just arrived from Collings - please give us a little time for photos and sound samples.

New Collings D-2H w/ Adirondack Red Spruce Bracing Guitar 'Sold'

Herringbone purflings around top, with outer multiple ivoroid bindings around top and back edge. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and saddle. Ebony pins. Nickel Waverly tuners.
Usually we have been ordering 'straight' D-2H guitars from Collings, with Sitka tops and Sitka bracing... But we've heard very nice results from Sitka Spruce mated with Adirondack Red Spruce braces. The idea is for the Spruce top to retain a little more stiffness, so that as it "breaks-in" or "opens-up", it doesn't lose the cutting power.

New Collings D-2HAV Red Spruce Top & "Vintage Now" Neck Guitar 'Sold'

Another Collings with the great "Vintage Now" neck. These profiles are the "gentleman's version" to the old "Vintage" necks which were copies of the big, full necks that mid-'30's Martins employed. This newer profile is still using the 1 3/4" width at nut, and still flares the fingerboard as it approaches the body, just not quite as much. It also has a slightly wider pin spacing at bridge - just not quite as much as full "Vintage" option has. Likewise, the profile on back of neck has slightly less "meat" then the full "Vintage" profile does.
Beautiful and powerful guitar! Indian Rosewood back and sides, with Mahogany neck. Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and saddle, with Ebony end pin and bridge pins. Waverly nickel tuners.
This is typical of Collings, being very strong even as a day-old guitar. We'll have photos if it doesn't sell before we can take them...

New Collings D-2HAV Bearclaw Red Spruce top Guitar 'Sold'

New Collings Rosewood body Dreadnaut with Bearclaw Adirondack Red Spruce top, Mahogany neck and Gabon Ebony fingerboard and bridge. 1 3/4" nut width combined with Collings' "Vintage Now" neck. This means the neck does flare out toward the bridge, but only about half-way toward the real wide 1937 Martin fingerboards. This is a close dimension to Del McCoury's original Martin neck. Not only is the fingerboard not quite flared as 'wide', the neck is a little beefier than a standard neck today but not quite as 'thick' as a 1937 'big' Martin neck. Many players in our store call this a 'perfect' neck profile, so naturally we have begun to order lots of them from Collings.
This D-2HAV has the usual appointments - Wooden herringbone purflings around top edge of body, with multiple ivoroid bindings showing on outside edge of top and back. Nickel Waverly tuners. Ebony end pin and bridge pins. Bone saddle and nut. Rosewood back has traditional marquetry strip down center seam.
Talk about 'real' sound... this guitar has it.
Crisp attack and full balanced tone. It will quickly fill a room with beautiful sound.

New Collings D-2HBaaaA - AAA Brazilian and Red Spruce Guitar 'Sold'

This is an exceedingly rare guitar nowadays from Collings. This guitar is just now coming to us, though we ordered it two years ago from Collings. This demonstrates how scarce and precious the highest grades of Brazilian Rosewood have become. The folks at Collings tell us that future orders of "AAA" Brazilian guitars will come with quite a higher price tag than this one...
1 11/16" width at nut. Especially beautiful "AAA" grade Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, that show off quarter-sawn grain with added "maiden hair" figure. Some luthiers grade this wood "Master Grade" because of the added beauty of the figured wood as well as having great color and quarter-sawn orientation. Master grade Adirondack Red Spruce top that shows off lots of medulary rays.
Grained ivoroid bindings on top and back, with Herringbone top purfling. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Waverly open back tuners (made in Montana, by the way). As with all Collings guitars, you get an excellent bone saddle and nut and Ebony bridge pins and endpin.
Typical of Collings tonal consistency, this guitar came to us sounding great... yet we know that whoever is savvy enough to buy this guitar will have the rare treat of hearing it open up further, maturing in tone and expression over the coming years to even another level of greatness.

New Collings D-2HG German Spruce top Guitar 'Sold'

This is a wonderful guitar. Indian Rosewood back and sides, with very high-grade German Spruce top. Mahogany neck. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Brazilian Rosewood peghead overlay. Wooden Herringbone purflings on top edge. Multiple ivoroid body bindings. Waverly pre-war style nickel tuning machines. Ebony bridge pins and endpin. Bone nut and saddle. 1 3/4" width of fingerboard at nut.
As good as the Collings guitars are with Adirondack Red Spruce tops are, we feel that these German Spruce top examples are much more open to start with. In other words, you don't have to play away the sharpness of the Adirondack sound waiting for it to 'round off a bit'.
Extremely full sound with just the right "bite" to the attack. This is really a great instrument - it is hard to put it down after you start to play it.

New Collings D-3 Brazilian Guitar 'Sold'

Adirondack red Spruce top, "A" grade Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Abalone sound hole rosette. Bound fingerboard. Multiple bound body and headstock. Gold Waverly tuners. 1 11/16" fingerboard width. Getting a Brazilian guitar from Collings is incredibly difficult these days. We were lucky to have had several ordered before Collings cut off new Brazilian orders in 2007.
*Our usual practice has been to order Collings Brazilian guitars with "AAA" grade woods. But lately, with the diminishing supply of these Brazilian sets, we are working with Collings to choose appropriate sets of slightly lower grade Brazilian  in order to get a supply of guitars.
Grade of "AAA" usually means that visually it is even-colored and even-grained, with predominant quarter-sawn grain orientation.
Grade of "AA" can mean mostly quarter-sawn but with color blotches, or it can mean partially quarter-sawn.
Grade of "A" can mean some quarter-sawn straight grain, but with color blotches, like this D-3 has.
Our new D-3 has predominantly straight-grain wood in center of back, then leans toward flat-sawn wood at wider parts. It also has darker streaks in the wood.
"Sound-wise"... this guitar has every bit of the presence and power that you come to expect from Collings Brazilian Dreadnauts.

New Collings D1 Guitar 'Sold'

New. 1 11/16" width at nut. Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Sitka Spruce top with plenty of lovely silky side rays. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and intonated saddle. Ebony pins. Waverly nickel tuners. Graduated size pearl dot inlays in fingerboard. Multiple tortoise binding on top edge, single tortoise binding on back.
It's always been a little bit funny how so many people buy Collings guitars with Adirondack Red Spruce tops as if it is a necessity. Sure, they sound great... but so do the Sitka topped models like this one. Powerful and full sound with lots of 'gusto', without the longer break-in periods for Adirondack.
This is a very fine example of a hot Mahogany guitar with great attack, great balance, depth and power. The set-up is very nice.

This guitar just arrived and the first guy to play it here was one of our favorite players, Bill Neaves. He took it into the studio to record some sound samples and quickly announced that he really liked it and that it was a very strong guitar.
In general, D-1A's have almost become the "standard" of the modern Mahogany Dreadnaut guitars. They are known for their thunderous sound, much like the revered pre-war D-18's of the 1930's and early 1940's.

New Collings D1A Guitar 'Sold'

Fresh in from Collings - their top of the line Mahogany Dreadnaut. Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck, with Adirondack Red Spruce top. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing at bridge. Ebony fingerboard with small dot inlay. Waverly pre-war style open-back tuners. Bone saddle and nut. Ebony bridge pins and end pin. Body bound with tortoise, with multiple lines showing on top edge. Ebony peghead overlay.
D1A guitars seem to be one of those instruments that I hear people regularly commenting on, saying things like, 'one day I'm gonna get one of those'... Or, 'wow, that thing is a powerhouse guitar'. All you have to do to hear it for yourself is to sit down with one for a little while and play it.
This one is very strong, with all the cutting power you need, the depth and presence, and clear beautiful tone. Nobody will ever state that Mahogany guitars can be thin sounding when this guitar is in the room.

Exc(+) condition. Quite nice condition with no dings or dents and no fret wear. There are 2 or 3 of the tiniest touch-marks on the Spruce top, but even I have a hard time finding them.
Choice Mahogany back, sides and neck with Adirondack Red Spruce top. 1 3/4" width at nut. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Beautiful light sunburst top. Bone nut and saddle. Ebony bridgepins and endpin.
The Red Spruce top shows typical wide grain transition to tight grain in center of top.
This is a very nice playing guitar. We just got it in and put a fresh set of med phosphor-bronze strings on it and it sounds great - very enunciated and full. We don't get many 2 year old D1A guitars in here and its always a treat when we do, because we get to hear them after the 'sharpness' of the Adirondack Red Spruce top has eased up a bit.
If you are looking for a good used Collings, this may be the one for you. The same guitar sells new for over a thousand dollars more than our price on this fine example.

New Collings D1AV w/ "Vintage Now" Neck Guitar 'Sold'

This is the venerable 'bone shaker' Mahogany Dreadnaut from Collings. Built with choice Mahogany back, sides and neck, and highest grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Ebony pins. Bone saddle and nut. Waverly vintage style open-back tuners.
Dreadnaut guitars from Collings are available with several choices for fingerboard width at nut and also for profile of the neck.
Collings tends to really "dial in" the feel of a 1 3/4" nut width, causing it to feel 'right', even to many players who do not seek a wider neck.
The "Vintage Now" neck profile means that the pin spacing at bridge is slightly wider than standard, but not quite as wide as a mid-'30's Martin Dreadnaut had.
Again - this compromise allows the feel to be shifted to what some would feel to be an advantage in playing comfort, without pushing it all the way to what many consider to be 'too much'.
Because of these things working so well, we have many customers who have proclaimed it the 'ideal neck' for feel.

New Collings D1AVN Guitar 'Sold'

New. Really, what can I say about a guitar like this...? If you are reading this, you probably already know Collings' guitars, and possibly have played and heard a D-1A.
If you already are familiar with these models, you don't need to be told about their tone and power and projection.
If you are not familiar with them, please read on:
D-1A's have established themselves as one of the hottest flatpicking guitars ever designed and built. They deliver a crisp, bold attack, with plenty of "boom" in the lower register. They have depth to balance the clear, clean highs.
When brand new, these Adirondack top D-1A's sound great, but after a few months of being "alive", they begin to open up tremendously, with the attack changing to be more full and less strident. After one year they are on their way to being fully opened-up, but it is really after about 2 years that you begin to hear the guitar sounding more like a true vintage sound than a new guitar.
Seriously... I rank these guitars in highest category of Mahogany Dreadnaut, and cannot think of a rival guitar that out performs them.
High grade Mahogany back, sides and neck. "AAA" Adirondack Red Spruce top with very wide grain lines throughout. Ebony fingerboard and bridge and peghead overlay. Graduated pearl dot inlays in fingerboard. Nickel Waverly tuners. Bone nut and intonated saddle.
The designation, "VN", means "Vintage Now" neck profile. This means that this guitar has 1 3/4" width at nut and also has a slightly larger neck profile in your hands. The neck isn't really thick, because the "Vintage Now" profile is close to a 1930's and 1940's Martin profile that was 'in-between' the really wide and thick necks and the later slimmer necks from around 1940 and on.

New Collings D2HA Brazilian Rosewood Guitar 'Sold'

It is extremely hard to get these "AAA" Brazilian Rosewood dreadnauts from Collings in the last 2 years. We were lucky in that we had a track record with Collings for ordering these fine guitars from them over the previous years, and were on order for several of them when they anounced a moratorium on new Brazilian orders. So, this guitar was actually ordered over 2 years ago.
This guitar has many of the great options that make them so enjoyable to play: 1 3/4" width at nut; "Vintage now" neck and bridge option, which flares the fingerboard like pre-war guitars, but just not as wide as the widest ones;  2 1/4" pin spacing at the bridge; Waverly open-back tuners; Bone nut and saddle, and Ebony bridge pins and end pin. And, of course, the excellent quarter-sawn "AAA" grade Brazilian and Adirondack Red Spruce.
The "usual" D-2HA appointments are also here, like the wooden herringbone purfling around top, multiple ivoroid/black/ivoroid bindings on top and back, Ebony fingerboard and bridge.
Same great Brazilian dreadnaut we always order from Collings and they always deliver - great woods, great tone. Makes you forget all about mortgaging your house for a '30's Herringbone.

Exceptional original condition. NO wear! NO signs of prior ownership. Select Indian Rosewood back and sides with high-grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Waverly nickel open back tuners. Bone saddle and nut, Ebony bridge pins and end pin.
Wooden Herringbone purflings around top edge, inside ivoroid outer bindings. Diamond volute under nut. Cut diamond inlays in fingerboard.
This guitar is just like buying one brand new. The condition is really great and the sound is great, with a big, open sound. Save around $500 buying this one rather than a brand new one.
There is a bonus feature for buying a 2-year old Collings guitar with Adirondack Red Spruce top. It takes just about 2 years for Collings dreadnaut guitars with Red Spruce to really exhibit signs of being fully "opened up"... So, purchasing this "new condition" guitar buys you a 2-year jump on the usual 'break-in' period. What this means is that the Red Spruce begins to 'round off' its sharpness of attack and settle into a more 'friendly-sounding' guitar.

We have been ordering some of these D-2H guitars with German tops for a few years now, and have been very happy with every one. In today's excitement of ordering instruments, many people just think that Adirondack Red Spruce is the "best" tonewood for a top. This is not true at all. Red Spruce has many desirable characteristics, but so does German Spruce, Lutz Spruce, Italian Spruce, Englemann Spruce, and Sitka Spruce.
Most of today's Collings guitars made with Red Spruce require a fairly lengthy 'break-in' period because the wood is so hard and stiff (longitudinally and laterally). German Spruce, however, allows you to enjoy a more "open" sound right away, as the characteristics of the Spruce are allowing it to be more resonant more quickly.
The German Spruce Collings guitars have a very nice "growl" and "snarl" and very strong expressive highs... and gives it to you at a price $450 LOWER than if you choose Red Spruce. Don't get me wrong, I love Red Spruce... but it is impossible to ignore how great German Spruce sounds when compared to Red Spruce. Time after time here in our store we've listened to them compared to each other, and had the German Spruce guitar "win" against Red Spruce.

We've been very impressed with this formula of the 14-fret OM body with short scale for some time. It is very apparent how the scale length allows more warmth and a slightly looser feel. It works well with fingerpicking as well as strumming or flatpicking.
