- Guitars from John Walker -
Many of you regulars are familiar with John Walker from his past history of fine guitar building. John was a "Master Luthier" alongside Ren Ferguson at Gibson, Montana for several years, directly hand-building some of the greatest guitars Gibson ever produced. Several of the most dramatic "one of a kind" Gibson show-piece guitars that are immortalized in the "Gibson Fabulous Flattops" book, were built by John Walker. Later, John spent some years as Steven Anderson's "right-hand man", building Archtops and Mandolins. Now he has announced a line of his own guitars - several "refined" traditional designs, as well as some new designs.
As time goes by we will show more and more of these great guitars. Remember... this is a "one-man" shop, and production is very limited, so don't hesitate too long to get one.
If you are a careful "thinker", and I know all of you browsing our website are, you'll see right away that these prices are a bit lower than they need to be... as a way to reward the early buyers.

New John Walker "Wise River" Maple Guitar 'Sold'

Here is a rare beauty... John Walker's popular "Wise River" guitar, but with highly figured Maple back and sides. 1 3/4" width of fingerboard at nut. Blonde finish. Adirondack Red Spruce top. John has made a couple of these Maple sloped shoulder guitars in the last few years and we have been very impressed by the sound of them.
The rare old original Gibson Maple J-45's and Southern Jumbos from the 1940's always sell quite a bit higher than the standard Mahogany versions from same years. And... they always sound great.
The Maple looks very nice at first glance, but when you look closer the flamed figure begins to appear three diminsional. It is a very striking look.
This guitar has the usual great John Walker appointments: Ebony bridge, fingerboard, peghead overlay and pins. Bone nut and saddle. Waverly Tuners, rift-sawn bridgeplate, tortoise celluloid bindings, to name a few.
It plays easily, and has a great voice.

2007 John Walker Clark Fork Master Grade Brazilian & Red Spruce Guitar 'Sold'

Exceptional condition. Only has bare hint of strings touching the frets and no dings, dents or scratches.
Sunburst slope shoulder guitar with long scale and 1 3/4" width at nut. Built in the tradition of pre-war "Advanced Jumbo" guitars, it has advanced scalloped hand-tuned bracing.
Master grade quarter-sawn old growth Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and peghead overlay, with beautiful delicate handcut abalone inlay pattern and JWalker logo in peghead. Ebony bridge with 'cut through' saddle. Ivory saddle and nut. Ebony pins. Very nice "late '30's" style sunburst. Firestripe pickguard. Finely crafted wooden bindings throughout, with multiple bindings on top edge with outside flamed Maple layer, flamed Maple single binding on back. The fingerboard binding can hardly be described, as Mr Walker "insets" the outer flamed Maple strip very cleverly into the side of the fingerboard without the Maple showing at top of fingerboard. Peghead is multiple bound with black outer bindings. Abalone soundhole rosette.
This is a very powerful guitar... Lots of presence and power, with excellent balance, attack, sustain and projection. It is set-up very well and needs nothing.
     * Remember - John Walker was a key player when Gibson re-issued the "AJ" guitar in 1990. I would suggest that he may have more experience with building "AJ" style guitars than just about anyone.

This is a uniquely designed parlor guitar. 9 1/2" width at upper bout, 13 1/2" width at lower bout. 3 3/4" depth at upper bout, 4 3/4" at lower bout. Typical of guitars hand made by John Walker, it has a very nice 'pop' at the attack of each note and great balance.
This guitar would cost six or eight hundred dollars more if John Walker hadn't deemed it to be sold at a discount because he took it to shows for product display. It would be an excellent choice for anyone who loves beautiful looking guitars that also sound beautiful.

New John Walker Lochsa Guitar 'Sold'

New. 25.5" scale length. Width at nut: 1 3/4". Bridge spacing: 2 1/4".
Beautiful Adirondack Red Spruce top with natural finish. Top is bound with holly and beautiful purflings. Sacha Rosewood back and sides, full of striking character. Holly bindings visible on the sides, and a center wide zipper strip. Ebony end graft. Mahogany neck, bound with holly under ebony. Ebony fingerboard with no position markers inlaid. Maple truss rod cover. Ebony peghead overlay bound with holly, with JWalker script inlaid in mother of pearl. Bone nut, bridgepins, endpin, and saddle. Ebony belly bridge. Nickel Waverly tuners.
We are not at all surprised that our latest new guitar from John Walker is amazing in beauty, tone, and character. Sacha Rosewood provides a richness of tone across the spectrum, and lightness to the weight of the guitar. With an overall tonal quality mid-way between mahogany and rosewood, the Sacha also comes out with lyrical overtones similar to the response you would expect from Brazilian. Coupled with Adirondack Red Spruce, Mr. Walker has built a guitar to the highest standards of beauty that also delivers fast response, clear highs, mid-range definition, and robust bass. We can't wait to hear how this guitar sounds as it opens up over the years, as it is already so impressive straight off of Mr. Walker's workbench. Crisp flatpicking, deep round rhythm, or smooth fingerpicking. This guitar does it all.

This is a very beautiful small body guitar. Sunburst top. Honduran Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Red Spruce top. Mahogany neck with Ebony fingerboard. 1 11/16" width at nut. Abalone soundhole rosette. Fingerboard is bound perfectly by Mr Walker insetting the wood binding into the side of the fingerboard - This method, which is quite a bit more difficult to do, prevents the wood binding being exposed level with fingerboard and subject to picking up dirt and oils from playing. Gold Waverly tuners and matching strap button. Fossilized Walrus Ivory "thru-saddle" and nut.
When this guitar sold, the customer almost immediately purchased another John Walker "Lolo Creek" to complement this one! So, that should give you some idea of how good this guitar is.

John Walker Lolo Special 1
View Detail
New John Walker Lolo Special 1936 L-00 Spec's Guitar 'Sold'

New. This is a very popular version of John Walker's "Lolo Creek" guitar, which is based upon the original L-00's from the 1930's. This version is not just 'inspired' by the older Gibsons, but is actually a very close copy of an original 1936 Gibson L-00.
When we say "copy", we need to clarify what that means. John Walker is the very same luthier who was "Master Luthier" at Gibson's acoustic guitar facility in Bozeman, MT during their seminal period of developing models for re-issue. Some models, like the J-35, the L-00, the "AJ", the J-185, and several others, had been "lost", meaning there were no blueprints, no forms, to build these guitars. Many of them hadn't been produced by Gibson since the 1930's.
John Walker's task was to closely examine various original models and to build handmade prototypes. These handbuilt prototypes were then used to teach the factory workers how to build the various models in production.
This guitar is faithful to these old original L-00's, having hide glue construction, faithful pre-war neck profile, 1936 bracing pattern, 1 3/4" width at nut, re-issue tuners, pins and fittings, and late '30's sunburst.
Madagascar Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. JWalker logo inlaid in peghead. 1/4" pearl dots in fingerboard. Straight-thru bone saddle in small rectangular bridge. Beautiful "Vee" neck profile. Honduran Mahogany back, sides and neck.
This is a great sounding guitar with a fast, crisp attack and very even across the tonal spectrum.

This guitar is one of John Walker's most popular models over the years. Universally considered to be well past the sound of the vintage original J-185's from the 1950's and 60's. These guitars are considered to be "all around" for a musician. They are ready to make any sound, and can be universally used across many styles and genres of playing. Fingerpicking, flatpicking, open chord, closed chord...this guitar does it all. This guitar sold new in 2011-12 for $5600. New John Walker Ruby River - Elite Guitar 'Sold'

New Guitar. Wow, what a beauty! Very beautiful strong Maple figure under a gorgeous sunburst finish.
Western Maple back and sides, with high grade select Sitka Spruce top. Highly figured Eastern Maple Neck with Ebony fingerboard.
Gold Mother of Pearl "split block" inlays in fingerboard. Gold MOP JWalker logo inlaid in peghead. Ebony "thru-saddle" bridge. Ivoroid multiple bindings, with Ivoroid/blk/wh/blk seen at top and back edge and Ivo/blk seen at the sides.
Peghead and fingerboard bound with Ivoroid. Ivoroid heelcap. Bone saddle, nut and pins. Gold Waverly pre-war style open-back tuners (made in Montana). Small "zipper" backstrip in center of the Maple back. 1 3/4" width of fingerboard at nut, 2 1/4" pin spacing at bridge.
This is a wonderful guitar for playability and for sound. John always sets his guitars up with really nice, low action and this one plays beautifully.
This body style, designed with similar shape and tone chamber as the old vintage "J-185" guitars, really works well across musical boundries.
What I mean to say is - it works well for flatpicking, strumming, fingerpicking, etc. So... until you play it, you'll just have to trust me that it sounds great...
But after falling in love with the sound, you also get to fall in love with the "look". John Walker makes great sunburst finishes, and this one is a fine example of that. And the Maple figure - Mr Walker painstakingly sands figured Maple to ultra fine, using sandpapers up to and past 3000 grit and then burnishing the surface with his hands - the figure seems to leap out at you... almost as if you could actually reach right into the wood and feel the ridges!
Silas, a guitar player who has worked here for 3 years, tells me that I have to say that this guitar has "Monstrous Sound"

New John Walker Wise River with Highly Figured Maple Guitar 'Sold'

New. Here is a very nice, very powerful slope shoulder guitar from John Walker.
Blonde finish. Highly Figured Maple back and sides, and a Master Grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Macassar Ebony fingerboard, bridge, peghead overlay, bindings, and end wedge. Wooden "zig-zag" backstrip. Pearl dot position markers inlaid in fingerboard. MOP JWalker logo inlaid in headstock. Waverly pre-war style open-back tuners. Traditional shape firestripe pickguard. Bone nut, bone intonated saddle and bone bridge and end pins.
1 3/4" width at nut. 2 1/4" spacing at bridge pins.
This guitar is great though at this writing it is only a few days old. Lots of power and projection, with an even balance. Very 'robust' and ready to play in your home or on stage. We have had only about 4 of these Maple "Wise River" guitars from John Walker. I am reminded of the times back when John was building handmade Gibsons in their custom shop in Bozeman, MT. It seems like every time John made a Maple slope-shoulder Gibson, the people who heard them would say things like, 'maybe the best one I've ever heard'... or, 'wow, that even beats the Mahogany'...
Very few luthiers can pull so much tone from Maple that you begin to 'prefer' it over more readily used woods... John does it very well...!  This is an outstanding guitar for the woods used, the perfection of building and the great sound.

New. Wonderful Slope-Shoulder guitar, made with excellent figured woods. 1 3/4" width at nut, 2 5/16" pin spacing in bridge.
Very highly figured Maple back and sides, with highly figured "Bearclaw" Adirondack Red Spruce top. Tortoise (celluloid) bindings on top and back of body, and endwedge. Ebony fingerboard, bridge and peghead overlay. Medium pearl dots in f.b. for position markers. Firestripe pickguard. Nickel Waverly tuners with Ivoroid buttons.
Since back in the early 1990's, John Walker has established himself as one of the rare luthiers that understands how to fully utilize Maple for guitar tone. Many collectors still swear that the Maple "AJ's", J-200's, J-185's that Walker handbuilt at Gibson in the early/mid 1990's are among the best guitars. John Walker's Maple guitars are never "too light on the bass", or too thin on the trebles. Mr Walker always gives you a lovely, full, bouncy bass and full treble range.
Years ago John Walker and I were discussing "which guitar body style" and "which woods" he should use for his first guitar made with the Walker logo (previously his handmade guitars had all said "Gibson Custom Shop"). I suggested he build a Slope Shoulder with Maple/Adirondack, as the handbuilt Gibsons he made with that combination were always a "hit" for tone. He built it that way... and I owned that guitar for years, until I had a weak moment during the recent Recession and sold it to a lucky buyer. It was a tremendous guitar.
This one is no exception - same great beauty and same great tone and same great playability that users have come to expect in guitars by John Walker.

Ebony fingerboard, bridge and peghead overlay, with "JWalker" Logo inlaid in pearl, and with small dots inlaid in fingerboard. 2005 John Walker Wise River Maple Shellac Finish Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(-) Condition. Here we have the first ever guitar that John Walker put his name on. Sure... by the time this guitar was built, John Walker had built many great handmade Gibsons in the Custom Shop and guitars for Stephen Anderson, but this is the first that was named a "Walker".
There are areas of stray pickmarks on the top, and a few dings as well, but nothing major at all. The back and sides are really clean. Neck is in great condition with no fret wear.
Adirondack top with single tortoise-shell binding. Curly Maple back and sides have really great figure. The whole guitar body is finished with hand-rubbed shellac. Mahogany neck with blank Ebony radiused fretboard. Ebony peghead overlay with "JWalker" inlaid in Pearl. Gibson tuners with black buttons. Fire-stripe pickguard. Comes with original composite straight-thru saddle on the guitar, as well as a new Walrus Ivory saddle in the case.
This is a really phenomenal sounding guitar. This is one from the personal collection of Greg Boyd, and we have been changing our minds about putting it up for months because the sound is so good. The tone is all there, great lows and highs from the first fret to the last.
John Walker is one of those rare Luthiers who can use Maple to it's full potential. Many Maple guitars can sound quick, but also thin. Walker's Maple guitars let you hear the Maple as a "special treat", where you can "feel" the mids and lows bouncing deep off the back and the highs have a beautiful "pop" attack and clear, sweet tones.
This guitar would cost over $5000 with the spectacular Maple and the Shellac finish...
There is no serial number, because this guitar was made before SN 001.
Set-up is great, action is great, no problems, no repairs.
     * I wish someone would remind me why I am selling this guitar... Oh yeah, i remember now... taxes, bills, more instruments to buy for the store, etc...
