New Kevin Kopp "Trail Boss" - Mahogany Cutaway 12-fret "Super Jumbo" Guitar 'Sold'

Kevin Kopp has made his mark with the "Trail Boss" guitars.  Choose between Mahogany, Maple, Indian Rosewood, and Brazilian Rosewood for back and sides, and choose Sitka, Adirondack Red, or Lutz Spruce for the tops.
The first one, the one that Leo Kotke bought and is using, is Mahogany! We had that first Mahogany prototype here in the store and I have to say I was greatly impressed. Built with choice Mahogany and Spruce, with 12-fret neck joint (using Long Scale!), and rounded Venetian cutaway. Multiple Ivoroid bindings on top and back. Sunburst top.

New Kevin Kopp "Trail Boss" - Mahogany Cutaway 12-fret Jumbo Guitar 'Sold'

Picture a handbuilt "J-200" with a rare 12-fret neck joint, but still with long scale length. Now add a round cutaway... The very first J-200's in the 1930's had "AJ" straight bridges - this one has that, too. The voicing of the top is wonderful, and this guitar delivers great sound. This "Trail Boss" is a guitar that flatpicks well, fingerpicks well, strums excellent full swing bar chords or open chords. It is an amazingly well-balanced guitar - huge bass with powerful trebles. Multiple bindings top and back. Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, gold open-back tuners. Mahogany back, sides, and neck. Choice "Master Grade" Sitka Spruce top. French-polish Shellac finish on spruce top, with nitro-cellulose lacquer on remaining parts of guitar. I really can't stress enough how singularly great this guitar is for pure joy of sound and playing. Add $250 for sunburst top, or $500 for full guitar sunburst.

New Kevin Kopp AJ Guitar 'Sold'

     New.
Adirondack Spruce top with excellent sienna sunburst finish. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides. Top, back and fingerbgoard have single Ivoroid bindings. Mahogany neck. Radiused fingerboard with diamond and arrow inlays. Waverly tuners. 25 1/2" long scale, 1 3/4" width at nut. Peghead overlay with Kopp logo and pearl diamond and arrow inlay. Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard, peghead overlay and bridge.
Sounds great right out of the box. Loud and punchy with lots of clarity and note definition. A good "AJ" style guitar, which departs from the "J-35" or J-45" design by having long scale length and Rosewood back and sides. Sonically, this translates into a "wall of sound" in a well-made AJ-style guitar. Our current sound samples demonstrate how good this example sounds when fingerpicked, but I am here to say that it also sounds excellent when flatpicked.

2005 Kevin Kopp K-35 Long Scale Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(-) condition. Some player wear on top - thumbpick marks on bass side of soundhole, some pick and fingernail marks on treble side below pickguard. There are some minor touch-marks and dings, but it is very nice overall.
Long scale guitar. Where most people think of slope-shouldered guitars with 'short-scale' length in mind, there were actually quite a few times when Gibson built long scale models, like the famous "Advanced Jumbo" guitars of the 1930's. Gibson Custom Shop under the direction of John Walker also handbuilt quite a few long scale "AJ 35's"... meaning it was a Mahogany Advanced Jumbo, or a long scale J-35. At any rate, this particular guitar makes good use of the long scale.
Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Sitka Spruce top. Sunburst finish. Nickel pre-war style open-back tuners. Antiqued ivoroid bindings on top, back, fingerboard and peghead. Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard, bridge and peghead overlay. Kopp logo in peghead is antique gold decal that looks just like the old c1940 Gibson silkscreen logos. Small dot inlays of MOP in fingerboard. Old style fire-stripe pickguard.
Ok... here it is... this guitar is a HONKER! It is "wide-open" and big, with everything about the tone in the "plus" column. Set-up is good and it has no problems.

1 3/4" width at nut. 24 3/4" scale length. 12-fret neck joint. At the time of this writing Kevin Kopp is on vacation, so I can't answer specific questions about bracing and tone bars. Built using hide glue.
Ebony peghead overlay with white decal that looks like the old silk-screened logos of the 1930's. Honduran Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Dot inlays in fingerboard. Top and back of body are bound with ivoroid. Pre-war style Waverly open-back tuners with ivoroid buttons. Bone saddle and nut and bridge pins. Traditional fire-striped pickguard.

The 12-fret neck joint causes the bridge to be moved about 1 5/16" farther away from soundhole. This enables the bridge and bridge plate to act differently with the braces and the top, causing a very pleasing pronounced attack and a good timbre to the tone.

New Kevin Kopp Trail Boss Lutz Spruce top Guitar 'Sold'

Sunburst Super Jumbo cutaway. Mahogany back, sides and neck. Lutz Spruce top.
     * 'Lutz' Spruce is a hybrid species that comes from crossing Sitka Spruce, White Spruce and sometimes Englemann Spruce. These hybrids show wonderful stiffness that many builders say rival Red Spruce, but with maybe a little different character to the tone. We have had several guitars with Lutz Spruce tops by Kevin Kopp and they all were great. They all had fast abrupt attack, like Red Spruce, but also more 'growl' right away, like German Spruce or Englemann.
Back to the guitar... This is just a wonderful sounding instrument. I don't know if I can remember ever having a Gibson J-200 that sounded as balanced, or had as great of a bounce to the bass.
To let you know just how good of a guitar these are, Leo Kotke has TWO Trail Boss 6-strings and a 12-string...

New Kevin Kopp Trail Boss Mahogany Cutaway 12-fret "Super Jumbo" Guitar 'Sold'

This is the guitar that quickly put Kevin Kopp "on the map" as a builder.  Using all top materials, start with a basic 'J-200 style' body, but brace it and voice it to have high degree of response and balance.  Use normal 25 1/2" scale length, but attach it at the 12th fret, so that the bridge is pushed further down from soundhole 1 3/8".  Then make it a rounded cutaway.
Voila'... there you have the "Trail Boss"... a very full sounding powerhouse guitar that gives a new meaning to the words, 'bass response'.  Yes, it is balanced, but the bass is a nice fat bouncy wave of tone.  Trebles are clear and strong, too.
Figured Mahogany back, sides and neck, with Lutz Spruce top.  Ebony fingerboard and bridge, with small dot inlays in the fingerboard.  6-ply Ivoroid top binding, 4-ply back binding.  Fingerboard and peghead are also bound with Ivoroid.  Beautiful sunburst top.  Waverly nickel tuners.
This is a tremendous guitar, for both its playability and its tone.  This is the same model that Leo Kotke is playing...!

Round, "Venetian" cutaway. "Kopp" logo inlaid in pearl in Ebony peghead veneer. The full sunburst finish is strikingly beautiful, and truly sets this guitar apart from many.
But... the best part is the tone...
Huge sound that is very enunciated and balanced. You can fingerpick this guitar or flatpick it - it works quite well for either. If you love good 'ol J-200's, you'll really love this guitar! It beats any J-200 I've ever played, and I've played hundreds of them...

This guitar has a huge low end with good treble and mid-range balance. Great open tone for finger-picking. Moving the 12-fret joint spaces the bridge further away from the soundhole 1 3/8 inches to allow for a different timbre in the attack which is very rich and satisfying.
