1880s Martin 0-28 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc (restored) condition. 1 7/8" width at nut.
Quarter-sawn Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with either Engelmann or Red Spruce top. Cypress neck. Newer ebony fingerboard and bridge. Entire guitar was refinished except neck. End of peghead was sanded on. Neck originally had straight peg tuners, and then later had some dog-ear banjo tuners, so there are holes left from those tuners. Top has only one small crack repaired. Back has one light crack repaired. Several small sidecracks professionally done and repaired tight. Neck has a pronounced V profile. Ivory outer bindings on top and back of guitar with multiple wood purflings seen on back of guitar and wooden herringbone purfling seen on front of guitar inside the binging. Ivory heelcap. Ivory rosette. Ivory endwedge. Currently ebony/abalone bridge pins. Ivory nut and saddle. Tasteful inlays in fingerboard.
This guitar has great setup and playability. With Silk & Steel strings, it is one of the finest sounding guitars in this whole store. Beautiful guitar.

1943 Martin 00-18 Guitar 'Sold'

Good(+) condition. This guitar has had several large side and back crack repairs. No cracks on top. Top was refinished, but original pickguard is intact. This guitar is in fine playing condition and all necessary work has been completed. Please call for accurate in-hand description of all repairs (406) 327-9925.
This venerable old workhorse guitar has played in many performances. It is a great playing, sounding and looking guitar from the front. The back of the guitar shows several crack repairs and scratches and random dings. Both sides of the guitar show crack repairs and yellowing of lacquer from moisture. There are no problems with the top which leads one to think the top was refinished because of moisture damage to the lacquer (like a water ring from a drinking glass on a fine table finish).
Cuban Mahogany back, sides and neck with Adirondack Red Spruce top. Rosewood fingerboard, bridge and peghead overlay. Original tortoise pickguard. Original tuners replaced with Waverly pre-war style open back tuners. Original factory scalloped bracing and original small Maple bridge plate in fine condition.
This is a great sounding and playing guitar that is ready to give you long hours of enjoyment while making your close friends jealous that they didn't see it first.

1939 Martin 00-18T Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(++) condition. Very rare guitar! Martin made quite a few 0-18 Tenor guitars, but not very many at all of the 00-18 Tenors, and to be sunburst only adds to it's rarity. Apparently only 2 of these were ever made.
This guitar has been treated very well for years and years. No cracks. Only some "polite" finish checking, some random nicks and dings, and very little wear on what appear to be the original frets. Small area of belt buckle wear on back.
Cuban Mahogany back, sides and neck, with Adirondack Red Spruce top. All original finish, original open-back Grover G-98 tuners, original pickguard, bridge, etc.
If you are looking for a great playing tenor guitar that also has "collector value", then this is it. The tone is superior, it plays easy, it has no problems.

Martin 175th Anniversary "000" Custom 1

2008 Martin 175th Anniversary "000" Custom w/ Madagascar Rosewood & Adirondack Red Spruce Guitar 'Sold'

Exceptional condition. Special issue "000" guitar from Martin to commemorate their 175th anniversary in business. This guitar only has a few very minor touch-marks on the top (can't see them when looking directly at the top), and one tiny touch on the side. In short, this is a fabulous guitar that is pretty close to new condition.
12-fret "000" with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides and Adirondack Red Spruce top. 25.4" scale length. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 11/32" pin spacing at bridge (in between 2 5/16" & 2 3/8").
The Red Spruce top is very nice, with lots of "silky" side rays. The Madagascar Rosewood looks really close to Brazilian Rosewood in grain character.
Guitar is fully bound, with multiple ivoroid body and peghead binding and single ivoroid binding along fingerboard. Heel cap and end wedge both are multiple bound with ivoroid. Diamond volute behind nut. Slotted peghead. Waverly 3-on-a-plate engraved open-back tuners with Ebony buttons. Ivory nut, saddle, bridge pins and end pin. Bridge pins and end pin have inlaid abalone dots.
Top of guitar has beautiful abalone purflings around top edge, around fingerboard extension, bordering end wedge, and around soundhole rosette. Decorative wooden marquetry strip in center of Rosewood back. Madagascar Rosewood peghead overlay with intricate abalone floral inlay. Ebony radiused fingerboard has traditional abalone 'cat eyes, diamonds and snowflakes' inlay pattern.
These long-scale 12-fret guitars have piqued my interest for years, because of how the 'timbre' of the tone shifts a bit when the bridge is located further down from soundhole and crossing of  X-braces. The attack seems 'more sure', and with full body sound after the attack.
This guitar sounds really great. It is very "open" sounding with a very quick, bold attack. The balance, depth, attack... they are all very good.
     * In 2008 the list price on this guitar was $15,750.00

1933 Martin C-2 Conversion to 000-42 Guitar 'Sold'

Exceptional conversion by our local luthier, John Joyner. This guitar is rare in that it has proper 14th fret neck joint, instead of 13 1/2 fret like so many of these conversions. Top is 10 years old. It has braces accurately copied from a 1930's OM. Pickguard is a vintage style Greven guard. The abalone top binding and soundhole rosette are flawless. This is a beautiful job of conversion. The Brazilian Rosewood is top grade, and back and sides are uncracked. Original finish on back, sides, neck and peghead. The top sounds very much like an original OM, with no tonal indication that this is a "newer" top.

View Detail
c1932 Martin C-2 Conversion to 000-42 Guitar 'Sold'

Excellent (restored, converted) condition. Has a few minor marks on top and back and one lacquer chip in back of neck.
Originally was an arch top guitar with flat back, built on the "000" or "OM" form at Martin in early 1930's. Many players have noticed that the original archtop configurations didn't have the right tonality for them. Starting in mid to late 1960's, luthiers saw the possibility of putting a good flat top on these C-2's, to convert them into great sounding flat tops. Even by the mid-'70's they were talked about as a very viable way to get an 'older guitar sound' by doing these conversions.
Beautiful quarter-sawn Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Full neck profile - deep rounded "V" that feels fine. The fingerboards have just a bit more radius in them than Martin uses in their flat tops today, but it is a great feeling fingerboard. Converted in about 8 years ago by Steve Helgeson, who did a very fine job with the symmetry of neck placement, angle of neck set, bridge, top, pickguard. As part of the restoration, Mr Helgeson masterfully refinished the back, sides and neck.
The finish work is excellent - if you have to refinish an old guitar, this is what they should look like. Helgeson also chose a very nice Spruce top for the job and completed the conversion by inlaying 'style 42' abalone trim around top edge purfling and soundhole rosette. Newer Gabon Ebony fingerboard with elaborate 'snowflakes and cat-eyes' abalone inlay. Ivoroid bindings along fingerboard and around peghead to match outer body bindings. Greven tortoise pickguard. Gabon Ebony bridge. Bridge pins appear original, with large flat head with large inlaid dot. Tuners are Gold Waverly pre-war style open-backs.
24.9" scale length. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing in bridge.
This is a remarkable guitar for tone and playability. The set-up is great.

There is a mild amount of player wear showing barely on frets and as smoothness on the matte finish. Some player wear through rosette decal.

1993 Martin D-16 Guitar 'Sold'

VG(+) condition.  Only a few cosmetic rubs in the finish, and some dings here and there. One extra strap-button hole beside the neck heel.
All solid wood construction, with select Mahogany back, sides and neck. Top appears to be select Englemann Spruce. Rosewood fingerboard, bridge, peghead overlay and heel cap. Small Abalone "cut-diamonds" inlaid in fingerboard and bridge. Tortoise-celluloid bindings on top and back of body. Wooden herringbone back strip and sounhole rosette. Tuners replaced with excellent Kluson copies, most likely by Gotoh. Original frets with minor denting. Dovetail neck joint.
The D-16's made prior to the mid-90's follow pre-war examples with advanced scalloped bracing. This is a great guitar, better sounding than a lot of the Martin's of that era and new Martins as well.

Exc condition. No repairs or problems. The original frets do show some moderate wear. This guitar does have a few dings and signs of prior use, but again, nothing major, nothing needing repair. Strap button installed.
Mahogany back, sides and neck. Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Cut diamond inlays. Lots of figure in the Sitka Spruce top.
This guitar sounds quite a bit better than a new D-18 from Martin. It plays fine and sounds very good.

New Martin D-16 GT Guitar 'Sold'

New Condition. Never been owned or used. This guitar still has all hang tags, etc. It was brought to us as a new guitar and traded for other items. NO wear, no dings, dents, scratches, etc.
Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Spruce top. Rosewood peghead overlay. Ebony fingerboard and bridge and heelcap. Black bindings around top and back of body. Herringbone soundhole rosette. Nickel tuners. Matte finish except for glossy nitro-cellulose on Spruce top.
Look... we've had lots of D-16's come through here since early 1990's. This is really one of the very best. It has a great response that is quick and sure. Very good balance. I really think you'd have to play through quite a few more expensive Martins (D-18, D-18V, etc), to find one that is as good as this one. I rate it "exceptional tone".
Comes with original paperwork and hang tags.

1936 Martin D-18 Sunburst Guitar 'Sold'

VG(+) condition. Advanced scalloped bracing. This is a thunderous old D-18. Top, back and sides are old refinish. Finish removed from center of back of neck and oil finish applied to the bare wood as a sealer. Original bracing and bridge plate. Bridge appears to be original and has been thinned. The top may be an old re-finish job, but looks correct for the period. The only doubt about it's originality comes from the sunburst laying over the soundhole rosette, which usually was scraped clean between coats at Martin in the period.
This guitar has a tremendous voice. The attack has that "cannon" shock when you hit the bass strings, but the treble are also powerful. The action is nice and the guitar is professionally set-up, with good nut and saddle, and frets are in good shape with slight denting.
This guitar has had some repairs: Back is un-cracked. Bass side has 2 short, very slight cracks that have been professionally repaired. Top has 2 professionally repaired cracks, one on each side of the fingerboard extension, with thin wood re-enforcement patch added underneath. There are 2 areas easily seen on the sunburst top photos, where marring occurred - one area where arm lays on edge of the top appears to have been inexpertly touched up a bit, and the other area on treble side of upper bout appears to be an "alcohol-related" incident of scraping thru finish and into the Spruce top a bit.
Again, I reiterate that the sound and performance of this guitar is in the very top category. It has the 'snap attack', it has the chest-thumping 'boom', it has clear singing trebles, it has depth and presence that other guitars wish they had. It is a fine, fine instrument for sound...

1943 Martin D-18 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(-) condition. Plenty of signs of prior stage use, but this guitar is in fine playing condition and sounds great. 1 11/16" nut width.
Cuban Mahogany (Swietina mahogany) back, sides and neck with Adirondack Red Spruce (Picea rubrens) top.
Adirondack Red Spruce top has 2 minor cracks repaired - both are near binding at lower bout of treble side. Back has 2 repaired cracks near bottom center. Side (treble side), has a couple cracks repaired and a jack hole filled. There is a slight peghead crack repair, but it is extremely hard to find and never broke thru the peghead overlay. Original lacquer, but some darker lacquer has been oversprayed onto slim bare wood areas around edge of sides and back where lacquer was worn away and also around jack hole repair. French polish applied to pickwear around soundhole and pickguard.
Back of neck shows hand wear thru the finish. New Ebony fingerboard and copy bridge perfectly professionally installed by John Joyner in early 1990's. This work was performed so well that it appears to be the original fingerboard and bridge.
We have known this guitar since around 1992. It has been owned by 3 of the top acoustic musicians in the Northwest as well as owned by possibly the best orthopedic surgeon in Montana. It is a tried and true champion guitar with the usual 'snap and boom' that guitars of this era are known for... But also more... It has a wonderful balance that exhibits more full bass than some and also a roundness and smoothness that isn't found on every good D-18. This guitar is punchy and enunciated in single string solo work or walking bass notes between chords, but is also a great one for full chord blend with open chords or barre chords. It does have the chest thumping, bone jarring "cannon" sound. Huge presence, delightful tones, and power and projection and goodness.

Exc(-) condition. Almost no cracks - One repaired crack on the top along the outside edge of pickguard, and one repaired back crack. Top has lacquer checking, pick wear and a few other dings. Back has several moderately sized dents and dings. The binding on the back has a few nicks as well. Back of neck has some finish rubbed off and a few other marks, but nothing that affects playability. Small amount of wear on frets. Strap button installed on heel cap.
Back and sides refinished by Kevin Kopp approximately 12 years ago. When we picked this guitar up in Denver, a previous owner had painted the back and sides almost black, using heavy amount of Tobacco Brown lacquer. Naturally we were surprised when the heavy finish was removed to reveal no problems... in other words, there was never any trauma that necessitated a refinish. Kevin expertly applied a nice thin coat of nitro-cellulose lacquer and it is readily apparent that the newer lacquer is not adversely affecting the sound.
1 11/16" width at nut, 2 1/4" pin spacing at bridge. Nut appears to be Ivory and appears to be original. Bone cut-thru saddle. Ebony bridge pins and endpin. Original tuners, probably Waverly Open-Back, with metal buttons.
Recent copy bridge, neck reset and professional fretwork. This guitar is in very nice playing condition. It has a big, big sound. NOT a thin sounding guitar at all... full presence, lots of bass, powerful treble, big booming punch.

2005 Martin D-18 Authentic 1937 Re-Issue Guitar 'Sold'

Exceptional condition. This guitar is very nice and clean. There are just 3 or 4 very small "touch marks" in the finish around the body.
The D-18 "Authentic" is a close "copy" or "re-issue" of the mid-1930's D-18's that are so famous for their power and presence. These have the important features of not only matching the "look" to the old originals, but also the materials, methods and sound.
There are several features that are easily identified by people, the advanced scalloped braces, Red Spruce top, wider neck (1 3/4" at nut) and wider bridge pin spacing (2 5/16"), open-back tuners, straight-thru saddle, black bindings, etc. But what you 'don't see' is equally, if not even more, important. Small details in the construction, like using hide glue, more careful scalloping of braces closer to the X, thinning of tops and backs, flaring of fingerboard as it approaches body, more "full" neck profile, original style truss-rod buried in neck, tucking of bridge plate under braces, etc, all add up to make this "new" guitar very close to the originals.
Mahogany back, sides and neck with wide-grain Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Graduated size abalone dot inlays. Bone saddle and nut. Old style celluloid pickguard. Open back tuners.
These guitars are one of the few "newer" Martins that collectors and players are buying. They are made in smaller quantity than most models and are known for delivering very good sound.
Here is a very nice one in great shape and all set-up to play very well. It has real strong sound...

Adirondack Spruce top with some areas of interesting bearclaw figure. Mahogany neck, back, and sides. Ebony bridge and bridgepins. Graduated abalone dots inlayed in ebony fingerboard. Fossilized ivory nut and saddle. One line of black binding visible on sides and back of guitar, with 5-ply black and white showing on top. Some finish flaws are visible in binding. Black center strip, endwedge, and heelcap. Brazilian Rosewood peghead overlay with old-style black-bordered "C.F. Martin and Co est. 1833" silkscreen logo.
The D-18 Authentic series are built to recreate iconic pre-War Martin sounds using techniques such as hide glue and forward-shifting Advanced X scalloped braces (for 1937 specs). The wider neck is reinforced with a non-adjustable T-bar. Martin discontinued the 1937 model in favor of a 1939 version. The 1937 Authentic series are highly regarded for their wider necks.
This guitar comes to us from a bluegrass enthusiast who knows how to pick 'em. It's got great Martin sound and is broken-in and ready to play. Perhaps it's the choice of woods, authentic construction, or simply the mass of the wider neck, but this guitar has a great deep bass and long lyrical sustain that keeps on ringing.

Exc(++) condition. No fret wear, no problems, no player wear. It has a very faint touch mark between pickguard and binding that is hard to see. This guitar is only a couple of months old and was hardly played. There is a strap button professionally installed in correct position on neck heel.
Choice Honduran Mahogany back, sides and neck, with Adirondack Red Spruce top. The Red Spruce top has bold red late-wood grain and lots of silk (medullary rays).
Brazilian Rosewood peghead overlay. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. 1 3/4" width at nut, and 2 5/16" pin spacing at bridge. Ivory nut and ivory "cut-through" saddle. Special "D-18 Authentic" pickguard installed at Martin, instead of the usual "photo-figure" pickguard. Ebony end pin and bridgepins - the bridgepins have been beautifully fit to this guitar. Small graduated abalone dots inlaid in fingerboard.
In case you don't know, the "GE" designation stands for "Golden Era". This means the guitar is built closer to early D-18 spec's than most modern versions of the D-18. "1934" is stamped into the headblock to remind you that this guitar harkens back to that earlier period of spec's and materials and construction.
Some of the "GE" appointments are things you can see and feel, like the Waverly open-back tuners, the 'cut-thru' saddle, the 1 3/4" nut width, the flaring fingerboard that culminates in allowing wider bridgepin spacing, and the more full neck profile.
And, there are some things you don't see, like the advanced, scalloped bracing, the lighter profiling of the braces, and the small Maple bridgeplate.
These things all work together to make a powerful guitar that is very popular with serious players. It has lots of power and a good balanced voice.

2014 Martin D-18 GE Sunburst Custom Shop Guitar 'Sold'

"As New" condition... Featuring a beautiful Amber sunburst finish on an Adirondack top that is referred to by many as a "shaded top" more than a 'sunburst'.
Adirondack forward shifted scalloped braces, w/ cloth reinforcement strips. Mildly figured Mahogany back and sides. Figured Mahogany neck with large profile "V" shape, 1 3/4" width at the nut. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. The tone of this guitar is smooth and pleasant, with great single note definition and more than enough grit and power to stand it's own in a jam or on stage. The action has been professionally dialed in creating a very comfortable feel and playability. This instrument would suite styles ranging from subtle finger picking to heavy hitting flat picking, and all areas between...
The specific Custom features are subtle. The Logo and the Pickguard are same as on a D-18 Authentic. The order sheet spots out the bone saddle and nut as Custom features, but I think now all D-18 GE guitars have bone nuts and saddles. The shaded top is a custom color and special order sheet shows all the parts of the process that are unique, from type and color of wood filler used, to stains used, etc.
Ok... now don't think about the custom features, or the fabulous "as new" condition

Exc (+) condition. Nut width: 1 11/16". Only the lightest touches on the frets, and a couple of barely visible lines of finish checking on the bass side upper bout. These are so hard to see we cannot get them to appear on photographs. This is an exceptionally well-cared for previously-owned Martin.
Spruce top. Mahogany neck, back, and sides. Neck has modified V-shape for a vintage feel. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Graduated abalone position dot markers inlaid in fingerboard. East Indian Rosewood peghead overlay with black-bordered gold C.F. Martin & Co logo. Tortoise binding visible on sides, with 5-ply binding on top and multiple lines in rosette. Tortoise endwedge. Black center seam in back. Nickel open-back Gotoh tuners. Strap button professionally installed in correct position on heel. Ebony heelcap.
This Martin sounds great. Very pleasant to play a fiddle tune, through the flatpicking and chord strumming. Like any good Martin dreadnaught, you can clearly hear the bass runs pop out of warm chords, and your tone will shine through bright and clean when you go to take a solo. This guitar has enough "ummpfh" to produce a pleasant and relatively loud response while fingerpicking. Please call for further description and pricing. (406) 327-9925.

1956 Martin D-21 1st Year Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. AAA-grade quartersawn Brazilian Rosewood. Also has original perfectly quartersawn Brazilian Rosewood bridge and original Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard.
This guitar is in very nice condition. It has no cracks showing, but there is one repaired crack beneath pickguard that has been repaired and cleated. Original finish is in very nice condition. Slight belt buckle wear on back. Small strap button hole filled on base side of neck heel.
1956 was first year of the Martin D-21 guitars listed in the Martin catalog. These are pretty rare guitars for Martin because they are 'between' a D-18 and a D-28. Martin designed it by building a D-18 with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. The guitars were always popular, with several famous players using them, Hank Williams, Sr and Jim Croce, to name a couple.
Today these are sought after by players and collectors. Players like them because they usually exhibit a little more crisp attack and more focused bass response than D-28's from the same years. Collectors like them because of the Brazilian Rosewood and also because martin only made around 2000 D-21's between late 1955 and 1967.
So... blow the dust off your credit card and give us a call... This is a fine one to own and play and to pass down to your heirs. The set-up is good, with nice action and it sounds great with no problems.

Quarter-sawn Brazilian rosewood back, sides, fingerboard, bridge and peghead overlay.  Sitka spruce top. Original Kluson DeLuxe tuners. Original pickguard and bridge.
This is a really great sounding D-21... wonderful tone and balance, and with a thunderous attack. It really comes across with sound like an early '40's Martin. Please call for full in hand description.

1966 Martin D-21 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(-) condition. Great sound. Professionally re-topped by Martin with advanced bracing, an excellent Adirondack Red Spruce top and small Maple bridge plate and original pickguard. Anyway, the overall look and feel and performance are all very great.
The work is very high level. It is very hard to tell the top is not original... The main evidence is the advanced bracing and the small hard Maple bridge plate. Not only does the newer Adirondack Red Spruce top "look" great, but this guitar has a great sound that rivals my 1956 original D-21 with Adirondack Red Spruce top
Everything is in great playable shape. Great setup, neck angle and action. Two long back cracks repaired. Top shows normal player wear, and two or three random dings and one dent in the treble side binding. Gold Grover Rotomatic tuners.
Adirondack Red Spruce top. Small Maple bridge plate. Beautiful Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Rosewood fingerboard and bridge.
This guitar has had a recent professional neck reset and recent professional fret work. Usually, in most cases, you hate to hear about a guitar having to have a new top, but in this case the top is a clear advancement of tone and an upgrade for the future collectability of this guitar. It is possibly the only D-21 with an official Martin advanced-braced Adirondack top. It sounds much better than most late '60's D-21's that I have been around, having more presence and snappier attack than many do.
     * You may notice that the price of this guitar has been significantly reduced.

Exc(-) condition. Pickguard crack repair. One slight crack repaired at bridge. Original black pickguard replaced with high grade tortoise copy. Original bridge replaced with faithful professional Brazilian Rosewood copy bridge. Original rosewood bridgeplate replaced with small maple bridgeplate. Braces professionally scalloped. This guitar is set-up with nice low action.       These D-21's are pretty rare compared to D-18's and D-28's. They have the bindings of a D-18, but the Brazilian Rosewood of a D-28. They actually have MORE Brazilian Rosewood than a D-28 from same years, due to fingerboard and bridge also being Brazilian Rosewood.
This guitar is all set up, and sounds very strong. Very crisp, enunciated attack with lots of volume. Did you ever wonder how a '60's Martin would sound "if only they'd scalloped the braces"?

East Indian Rosewood back, sides, heelcap, and peghead overlay. Peghead has rounded corners to resemble 1960's Martins with "Old Style" large CF Martin & Co decal. Ebony fingerboard with mother of pearl graduated position dot markers. 1973 dime inlaid at 3rd fret. Jim Croce signature inlaid between 18th and 20th frets. 1946 Martin D-28 Herringbone Guitar 'Sold'

Excellent condition. All original finish. One 4" back crack repaired. Moderate player wear and some random dings. Bridge professionally replaced with faithful vintage copy. Neck recently professionally re-set. New frets. There is one other very small repair I'll tell you about below.
Quarter-sawn Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Cuban Mahogany neck. Adirondack Red Spruce top. Original Ebony fretboard. Original open-back tuners. Original pickguard.
All original braces. Original small Maple bridgeplate.
There is one minor repair of the top binding, just up from end pin. This repair is very slight, but just enough to notice if you look directly at it. It appears that bass side of binding around top came loose for about one inch, and when glued back the outer ivoroid stood out a bit thicker that it's couterpart directly on other side of center line. To even it out, the luthier slightly scraped an inch of the outer ivoroid binding to make it smoothly match the opposite side.
This is a very fine example of a late-issue 'Herringbone' D-28. It has never been gelded. It delivers lots of power, with great tonality.

They say the records do not show an official write-up for a change to "Red Spruce" top, but that the guitar build order does show a 'grade change' order for the top. The person at Martin speculated that it could've received a Red Spruce top as an 'up-grade' to the standard tops (Sitka), that the D-28's usually had.

Martin D-28 Golden Era Guitar 'Sold'

#584 "As New" Condition. NO player wear, no dings! Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Red Spruce top, Mahogany neck. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. The tone is nice and full, and the playability is excellent. These guitars are Martin's re-issue of the "Herringbone" D-28 from the mid-1930's, the aptly named Golden Era of instruments. These follow the formulae that their forerunners had: Advanced scalloped bracing, Red Spruce tops, wide nut width, more meat on back profile of neck, wider pin spacing at bridge. To accommodate the wider bridgepin spacing the fingerboard also widens out as it approaches the soundhole. There are several more details to list, such as the open-backed tuners, the herringbone purflings, and the diamond volute, to name a few more. This guitar plays great and has powerful tone.

1970 Martin D-35 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc condition. There are a couple of incidental marks here and there on the guitar, but nothing to worry about. Some "polite" lacquer checking. Fret wear is minimal. No cracks. Bridge replaced with handmade copy.
Indian Rosewood back and sides, Mahogany neck and choice Sitka Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. Original Nickel Patent Pending Grover Rotomatic tuners in great shape. Multiple bindings along top, back and sides of body. Bound fingerboard.
This guitar is in great playing condition. Typical of many early '70's Martin guitars, this guitar had bridge located so that the saddle would not allow the guitar to intonate correctly. Our local Luthier, John Joyner, made an excellent copy with saddle situated so that the guitar now plays correctly in tune. You can't tell the work was done... and if I didn't mention it, you probably would never know...
This guitar is set-up up very well with nice med-low action and sounds very good.

VG+ condition. This is a very nice guitar with a couple of repaired top cracks, but very little player wear. There is finish checking, mainly on the Spruce top. There are a few light mars on the Spruce top. The back and sides and peghead are all very nice with no cracks. Back of neck has some random dings. Top has 2 repaired cracks: Center seam reglued from bridge to binding, "Usual" pickguard crack repaired (under B string).
Rosewood back and sides, Select Sitka Spruce top, Mahogany neck, and Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Gold Grover Rotomatics. Black pickguard. Abalone purflings around top edge of guitar and around soundhole rosette. Hexagon abalone inlays in fingerboard. White multiple bindings on top and back and peghead. Single white binding along fingerboard.
The Rosewood of this period is usually always stated as "Indian" Rosewood... but this Rosewood is different. It has much different color than the Purple hues of Indian Rosewood, and other different characteristics. It may be Kingwood, a highly regarded Central and South American Rosewood.
This guitar has just had extensive set-up and intonation corrected by John Joyner, here in Missoula. Typical of many 1970's Martin Dreadnauts, the bridge was originally located by Martin in the factory in a slightly wrong position, so that the saddle was in a place to cause it to NOT intonate correctly. John Joyner made a same-size copy Ebony bridge with saddle located correctly, so the guitar now plays in tune as it was intended to do. Mr Joyner also levelled the fingerboard, and also replaced the original cracked fingerboard binding with new matching binding.

The finish shows some tell-tale signs of possibly being refinished by Martin back in the 1970's or early 1980's. We aren't completely sure, and the previous owner can't tell remember so well.

If you are looking for a really clean one with no problems, this is the one. Great sound and playability.

2003 Martin HD-28VS Guitar 'Sold'

Exc condition. The only signs of player wear are some slight marks from thumbpick use and very light fingernail marks between pickguard and bridge. Very minimal fret wear. Back, sides, back of neck, peghead, fingerboard, etc are all in great shape. NO strap button ever installed in neck.
Rosewood back and sides with select Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Straight-thru saddle in bridge. 2002 Martin HD-28VS Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. This is a re-issue of the early Rosewood Dreadnaut that Martin originally made for Ditson. 12-fret neck joint with sloped shoulder upper body bouts. Slotted headstock.
Choice Indian Rosewood back and sides with select Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. "Thru-saddle" bridge. Mahogany neck. "Zipper" backstrip.
The "V" denotes the guitar is made with a strong tilt toward replicating the earlier original models, having Ivoroid bindings instead of white plastic, scalloped bracing, antique'ing added to the coloration and finish, and vintage style Waverly open-back tuners.
This guitar is in very nice condition, with only very slight signs of playing on the frets and a few very small lacquer chips in back of peghead slots from changing strings. It is set up well, plays great and sounds great.

2004 Martin HD-28VS w/ 12th fret neck joint Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(-) condition. Like any HD-28V, this guitar offers many "pre-war" appointments, like scalloped bracing, etc. But this guitar is built like the earliest rare Martin 12-fret Dreadnauts, with the slightly elongated upper bout and the slotted headstock and the 1 3/4" width at nut. Rosewood back and sides, with select Sitka Spruce top, Mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard and bridge. "Cut diamonds" pattern inlaid in fingerboard.
This guitar was owned and used by a serious "up and coming" flatpicker, and does show signs of use at festivals and jams. The top is pretty clean, but has some "one player wear" on both sides of strings just ahead of bridge. Back is in fine original condition. Treble side shows some marring near the waist, and has one 3" crack repaired at same area. Original Martin nut and saddle. Currently has brass bridge pins with large abalone-inlaid heads, but we are happy to take them in trade for a set of Ebony pins upon request.
This is a fine sounding guitar, no kidding. It isn't shy, and it does have a very good solid attack backed up with developed depth of tone. These guitars sell new for several hundred more than a standard HD-28V... So, take advantage of a bargain when you see one and get this guitar back to the jams!

Martin J-40 1

2005 Martin J-40 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. Hardly any sign of prior use. There are just a few very small touch-marks here and there, but nothing bad at all. There is one area on back binding where lacquer has chipped off - about 1 1/2" long. It is hard to spot at first, but you can feel the edges of lacquer where it has chipped away.
"0000" body size with depth similar to a dreadnaut. Rosewood back and sides. Select Sitka Spruce top. Multiple white/black/white bindings throughout, with 8-ply showing on top edge of body, 5-ply on back, and 3-ply seen at sides of body, top face of fingerboard and peghead. Heel cap is white and shows 3-ply layering. Multiple wh/blk/wh end wedge.
Abalone soundhole rosette. Ebony fingerboard with abalone hexagon inlays. CF Martin logo inlaid in headstock. Gold tuners. Tortoise pickguard. Ebony bridge with intonated "boxed" bone saddle. Brazillian Rosewood peghead overlay.
We've had quite a few J-40's over the years. Most of them have a great presence, especially in the bass. But some of them seem to have the nice low-mids and lows at the expense of the treble. This one, however, is balanced very well. The bass is absolutely great, with a huge bouncy attack on the low A and E strings. The highs are strong and have a beautiful lyrical sound that the microphone will love.

2004 Martin J-41 Guitar 'Sold'

Excellent condition. One tight back crack. Slight evidence of playing wear in frets, but very slight. Slight player finger wear on top in the finish between soundhole/pickguard/bridge. This guitar has a few random dings here and there, but nothing big. Gold strap button installed in correct position in heel. End of peghead shows a significant chip in the lacquer. It was well cared for and it looks great. The action is fine for playing and it needs nothing.
Select Indian Rosewood back and sides, choice Sitka Spruce top and Mahogany neck. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Abalone top purflings and soundhole rosette. Ivoroid bindings on top, back, fingerboard and headstock. Ivoroid heelcap. Gold open-back tuners.
The sound is very open and full. Many of the earlier J-40's were known for having an unbalanced "bottom-heavy" tone. Not this one - this guitar has great balance, great attack and great sound.

1979 Martin M-38 Guitar 'Sold'

Excellent condition. Indian Rosewood back and sides, choice grade spruce top. The Martin 'M' guitar is basically a "0000-size" guitar. Ebony fingerboard with Rosewood bridge. Only a few marks against this guitar being "Excellent(+)" condition - it has a couple of small dings in the top, and incidental mark on back of neck, and a mild finish check running along center seam of top from bridge to binding (center seam in wood is not open).
This guitar has great tone and has a quick attack. It is well balanced and would work for fingerstyle playing or with a flatpick.
