1954 Martin 00-18 Guitar 'Sold'

Exceptional condition. This may be the nicest one - certainly the nicest one we've ever had. NO cracks, NO repairs. Original finish, original bridge, original tuners, original pickguard, etc. Only has some very minor dings here and there, but no significant scratches or dents. And it was recently set-up to play real well.
Mahogany back, sides and neck. Spruce top. Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Newer bone nut and saddle. Original open-back tuners.
Very strong "opened-up" sound that is well-balanced from bass to treble. It is truly a joy to play from the first position to the end of the fingerboard. Fast, sure attack with beautiful tone everywhere on the fingerboard. This is one of those rare guitars that is sought by collectors, for its originality and by players, for its tone and playability.

1939 Martin 00-18T Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(++) condition. Very rare guitar! Martin made quite a few 0-18 Tenor guitars, but not very many at all of the 00-18 Tenors, and to be sunburst only adds to it's rarity. Apparently only 2 of these were ever made.
This guitar has been treated very well for years and years. No cracks. Only some "polite" finish checking, some random nicks and dings, and very little wear on what appear to be the original frets. Small area of belt buckle wear on back.
Cuban Mahogany back, sides and neck, with Adirondack Red Spruce top. All original finish, original open-back Grover G-98 tuners, original pickguard, bridge, etc.
If you are looking for a great playing tenor guitar that also has "collector value", then this is it. The tone is superior, it plays easy, it has no problems.

Exc Condition. Nice Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood back and sides. Mahogany neck. Multiple bound top, with Herringbone soundhole rosette. Back and fingerboard are single bound.
No problems, but just a few player handling marks here and there from normal use - some stray pick marks on the Spruce top and some slight marring of lacquer on back of neck.
The action is nice and low. Frets show slight denting, but plays very good. Intonated saddle. This is a perfect guitar for a young serious player... Serious enough, in fact, for the previous owner to use to win the 2009 guitar contest at the Grand Targhee festival.

1933 Martin C-2 Conversion to 000-42 Guitar 'Sold'

Exceptional conversion by our local luthier, John Joyner. This guitar is rare in that it has proper 14th fret neck joint, instead of 13 1/2 fret like so many of these conversions. Top is 10 years old. It has braces accurately copied from a 1930's OM. Pickguard is a vintage style Greven guard. The abalone top binding and soundhole rosette are flawless. This is a beautiful job of conversion. The Brazilian Rosewood is top grade, and back and sides are uncracked. Original finish on back, sides, neck and peghead. The top sounds very much like an original OM, with no tonal indication that this is a "newer" top.

c1932 Martin C-2 Conversion to 000-42 Guitar 'Sold'

Excellent (restored, converted) condition. Has a few minor marks on top and back and one lacquer chip in back of neck.
Originally was an arch top guitar with flat back, built on the "000" or "OM" form at Martin in early 1930's. Many players have noticed that the original archtop configurations didn't have the right tonality for them. Starting in mid to late 1960's, luthiers saw the possibility of putting a good flat top on these C-2's, to convert them into great sounding flat tops. Even by the mid-'70's they were talked about as a very viable way to get an 'older guitar sound' by doing these conversions.
Beautiful quarter-sawn Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Full neck profile - deep rounded "V" that feels fine. The fingerboards have just a bit more radius in them than Martin uses in their flat tops today, but it is a great feeling fingerboard. Converted in about 8 years ago by Steve Helgeson, who did a very fine job with the symmetry of neck placement, angle of neck set, bridge, top, pickguard. As part of the restoration, Mr Helgeson masterfully refinished the back, sides and neck.
The finish work is excellent - if you have to refinish an old guitar, this is what they should look like. Helgeson also chose a very nice Spruce top for the job and completed the conversion by inlaying 'style 42' abalone trim around top edge purfling and soundhole rosette. Newer Gabon Ebony fingerboard with elaborate 'snowflakes and cat-eyes' abalone inlay. Ivoroid bindings along fingerboard and around peghead to match outer body bindings. Greven tortoise pickguard. Gabon Ebony bridge. Bridge pins appear original, with large flat head with large inlaid dot. Tuners are Gold Waverly pre-war style open-backs.
24.9" scale length. 1 3/4" width at nut. 2 1/4" pin spacing in bridge.
This is a remarkable guitar for tone and playability. The set-up is great.

VG(+) condition.  Only a few cosmetic rubs in the finish, and some dings here and there. One extra strap-button hole beside the neck heel.
All solid wood construction, with select Mahogany back, sides and neck. Top appears to be select Englemann Spruce. Rosewood fingerboard, bridge, peghead overlay and heel cap. Small Abalone "cut-diamonds" inlaid in fingerboard and bridge. Tortoise-celluloid bindings on top and back of body. Wooden herringbone back strip and sounhole rosette. New Martin D-16 GT Guitar 'Sold'

New Condition. Never been owned or used. This guitar still has all hang tags, etc. It was brought to us as a new guitar and traded for other items. NO wear, no dings, dents, scratches, etc.
Mahogany back, sides and neck. Select Spruce top. Rosewood peghead overlay. Ebony fingerboard and bridge and heelcap. Black bindings around top and back of body. Herringbone soundhole rosette. Nickel tuners. Matte finish except for glossy nitro-cellulose on Spruce top.
Look... we've had lots of D-16's come through here since early 1990's. This is really one of the very best. It has a great response that is quick and sure. Very good balance. I really think you'd have to play through quite a few more expensive Martins (D-18, D-18V, etc), to find one that is as good as this one. I rate it "exceptional tone".
Comes with original paperwork and hang tags.

1936 Martin D-18 Sunburst Guitar 'Sold'

VG(+) condition. Advanced scalloped bracing. This is a thunderous old D-18. Top, back and sides are old refinish. Finish removed from center of back of neck and oil finish applied to the bare wood as a sealer. Original bracing and bridge plate. Bridge appears to be original and has been thinned. The top may be an old re-finish job, but looks correct for the period. The only doubt about it's originality comes from the sunburst laying over the soundhole rosette, which usually was scraped clean between coats at Martin in the period.
This guitar has a tremendous voice. The attack has that "cannon" shock when you hit the bass strings, but the treble are also powerful. The action is nice and the guitar is professionally set-up, with good nut and saddle, and frets are in good shape with slight denting.
This guitar has had some repairs: Back is un-cracked. Bass side has 2 short, very slight cracks that have been professionally repaired. Top has 2 professionally repaired cracks, one on each side of the fingerboard extension, with thin wood re-enforcement patch added underneath. There are 2 areas easily seen on the sunburst top photos, where marring occurred - one area where arm lays on edge of the top appears to have been inexpertly touched up a bit, and the other area on treble side of upper bout appears to be an "alcohol-related" incident of scraping thru finish and into the Spruce top a bit.
Again, I reiterate that the sound and performance of this guitar is in the very top category. It has the 'snap attack', it has the chest-thumping 'boom', it has clear singing trebles, it has depth and presence that other guitars wish they had. It is a fine, fine instrument for sound...

2005 Martin D-18 Authentic 1937 Re-Issue Guitar 'Sold'

Exceptional condition. This guitar is very nice and clean. There are just 3 or 4 very small "touch marks" in the finish around the body.
The D-18 "Authentic" is a close "copy" or "re-issue" of the mid-1930's D-18's that are so famous for their power and presence. These have the important features of not only matching the "look" to the old originals, but also the materials, methods and sound.
There are several features that are easily identified by people, the advanced scalloped braces, Red Spruce top, wider neck (1 3/4" at nut) and wider bridge pin spacing (2 5/16"), open-back tuners, straight-thru saddle, black bindings, etc. But what you 'don't see' is equally, if not even more, important. Small details in the construction, like using hide glue, more careful scalloping of braces closer to the X, thinning of tops and backs, flaring of fingerboard as it approaches body, more "full" neck profile, original style truss-rod buried in neck, tucking of bridge plate under braces, etc, all add up to make this "new" guitar very close to the originals.
Mahogany back, sides and neck with wide-grain Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Graduated size abalone dot inlays. Bone saddle and nut. Old style celluloid pickguard. Open back tuners.
These guitars are one of the few "newer" Martins that collectors and players are buying. They are made in smaller quantity than most models and are known for delivering very good sound.
Here is a very nice one in great shape and all set-up to play very well. It has real strong sound...

2012 Martin D-18 GE Guitar 'Sold'

Exc.(+) Condition. This guitar is pretty close to "un-played" condition. There are just a couple of light random scratches and a few tiny dings in the top, but for the most part it is very clean. The back and sides also have just a couple of random little touches and dings, but nothing of great concern. Frets and neck are in great shape. No strap button installed.
Adirondack top with nice traditional sunburst finish. Mahogany back, sides and neck. Top is multiple bound, back has single binding. Radiused Ebony fingerboard w/ graduated Abalone dot inlays. Rosewood peghead overlay, Ebony bridge and pins. NIckel Waverly open-back tuners. No strap button installed on heel. 1 3/4" width at nut, 2 5/16" pin spacing at bridge.
Very nice, open sound, especially for such a new guitar. Big presence and commanding tone. This guitar is probably the best used D-18GE we've ever had... It is set up quite well, has hardly been played, and sounds great.
     * This model lists for over $4800 as a new guitar, selling for $3699 at the discount price... This one is pretty close to new condition and sounds like the one you'd buy after trying out a dozen of them.

2010 Martin D-18 GE with Upgrades Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(++) condition. No fret wear, no problems, no player wear. It has a very faint touch mark between pickguard and binding that is hard to see. This guitar is only a couple of months old and was hardly played. There is a strap button professionally installed in correct position on neck heel.
Choice Honduran Mahogany back, sides and neck, with Adirondack Red Spruce top. The Red Spruce top has bold red late-wood grain and lots of silk (medullary rays).
Brazilian Rosewood peghead overlay. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. 1 3/4" width at nut, and 2 5/16" pin spacing at bridge. Ivory nut and ivory "cut-through" saddle. Special "D-18 Authentic" pickguard installed at Martin, instead of the usual "photo-figure" pickguard. Ebony end pin and bridgepins - the bridgepins have been beautifully fit to this guitar. Small graduated abalone dots inlaid in fingerboard.
In case you don't know, the "GE" designation stands for "Golden Era". This means the guitar is built closer to early D-18 spec's than most modern versions of the D-18. "1934" is stamped into the headblock to remind you that this guitar harkens back to that earlier period of spec's and materials and construction.
Some of the "GE" appointments are things you can see and feel, like the Waverly open-back tuners, the 'cut-thru' saddle, the 1 3/4" nut width, the flaring fingerboard that culminates in allowing wider bridgepin spacing, and the more full neck profile.
And, there are some things you don't see, like the advanced, scalloped bracing, the lighter profiling of the braces, and the small Maple bridgeplate.
These things all work together to make a powerful guitar that is very popular with serious players. It has lots of power and a good balanced voice.

1956 Martin D-21 1st Year Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. AAA-grade quartersawn Brazilian Rosewood. Also has original perfectly quartersawn Brazilian Rosewood bridge and original Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard.
This guitar is in very nice condition. It has no cracks showing, but there is one repaired crack beneath pickguard that has been repaired and cleated. Original finish is in very nice condition. Slight belt buckle wear on back. Small strap button hole filled on base side of neck heel.
1956 was first year of the Martin D-21 guitars listed in the Martin catalog. These are pretty rare guitars for Martin because they are 'between' a D-18 and a D-28. Martin designed it by building a D-18 with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. The guitars were always popular, with several famous players using them, Hank Williams, Sr and Jim Croce, to name a couple.
Today these are sought after by players and collectors. Players like them because they usually exhibit a little more crisp attack and more focused bass response than D-28's from the same years. Collectors like them because of the Brazilian Rosewood and also because martin only made around 2000 D-21's between late 1955 and 1967.
So... blow the dust off your credit card and give us a call... This is a fine one to own and play and to pass down to your heirs. The set-up is good, with nice action and it sounds great with no problems.

Lacquer shows "pucker" along lower center seam, but center seam is tight. Honest player wear on the guitar.      Quarter-sawn Brazilian rosewood back, sides, fingerboard, bridge and peghead overlay.  Sitka spruce top. Original Kluson DeLuxe tuners. Original pickguard and bridge.
This is a really great sounding D-21... wonderful tone and balance, and with a thunderous attack. It really comes across with sound like an early '40's Martin. Please call for full in hand description.

1967 Martin D-21 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(-) condition. Pickguard crack repair. One slight crack repaired at bridge. Original black pickguard replaced with high grade tortoise copy. Original bridge replaced with faithful professional Brazilian Rosewood copy bridge. Original rosewood bridgeplate replaced with small maple bridgeplate. Braces professionally scalloped. This guitar is set-up with nice low action.       These D-21's are pretty rare compared to D-18's and D-28's. They have the bindings of a D-18, but the Brazilian Rosewood of a D-28. They actually have MORE Brazilian Rosewood than a D-28 from same years, due to fingerboard and bridge also being Brazilian Rosewood.
This guitar is all set up, and sounds very strong. Very crisp, enunciated attack with lots of volume. Did you ever wonder how a '60's Martin would sound "if only they'd scalloped the braces"?

1946 Martin D-28 Herringbone Guitar 'Sold'

Excellent condition. All original finish. One 4" back crack repaired. Moderate player wear and some random dings. Bridge professionally replaced with faithful vintage copy. Neck recently professionally re-set. New frets. There is one other very small repair I'll tell you about below.
Quarter-sawn Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. Cuban Mahogany neck. Adirondack Red Spruce top. Original Ebony fretboard. Original open-back tuners. Original pickguard.
All original braces. Original small Maple bridgeplate.
There is one minor repair of the top binding, just up from end pin. This repair is very slight, but just enough to notice if you look directly at it. It appears that bass side of binding around top came loose for about one inch, and when glued back the outer ivoroid stood out a bit thicker that it's couterpart directly on other side of center line. To even it out, the luthier slightly scraped an inch of the outer ivoroid binding to make it smoothly match the opposite side.
This is a very fine example of a late-issue 'Herringbone' D-28. It has never been gelded. It delivers lots of power, with great tonality.

Unusually well-developed sound with no mushy bass. Very open sounding D-28 for this era. Punchy attack with great tone.
     * I phoned Martin about the guitar's top. They say the records do not show an official write-up for a change to "Red Spruce" top, but that the guitar build order does show a 'grade change' order for the top. The person at Martin speculated that it could've received a Red Spruce top as an 'up-grade' to the standard tops (Sitka), that the D-28's usually had.

#584 "As New" Condition. NO player wear, no dings! Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Red Spruce top, Mahogany neck. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. The tone is nice and full, and the playability is excellent. These guitars are Martin's re-issue of the "Herringbone" D-28 from the mid-1930's, the aptly named Golden Era of instruments. These follow the formulae that their forerunners had: Advanced scalloped bracing, Red Spruce tops, wide nut width, more meat on back profile of neck, wider pin spacing at bridge. To accommodate the wider bridgepin spacing the fingerboard also widens out as it approaches the soundhole. There are several more details to list, such as the open-backed tuners, the herringbone purflings, and the diamond volute, to name a few more. This guitar plays great and has powerful tone.

There are a few light mars on the Spruce top. The back and sides and peghead are all very nice with no cracks. Back of neck has some random dings. Top has 2 repaired cracks: Center seam reglued from bridge to binding, "Usual" pickguard crack repaired (under B string).

Abalone purflings around top edge of guitar and around soundhole rosette. Hexagon abalone inlays in fingerboard. White multiple bindings on top and back and peghead. Single white binding along fingerboard.
The Rosewood of this period is usually always stated as "Indian" Rosewood... but this Rosewood is different. It has much different color than the Purple hues of Indian Rosewood, and other different characteristics. It may be Kingwood, a highly regarded Central and South American Rosewood.
This guitar has just had extensive set-up and intonation corrected by John Joyner, here in Missoula. Typical of many 1970's Martin Dreadnauts, the bridge was originally located by Martin in the factory in a slightly wrong position, so that the saddle was in a place to cause it to NOT intonate correctly. John Joyner made a same-size copy Ebony bridge with saddle located correctly, so the guitar now plays in tune as it was intended to do. Mr Joyner also levelled the fingerboard, and also replaced the original cracked fingerboard binding with new matching binding.

2007 Martin D-45 Koa Flamed Koa Guitar 'Sold'

Near Mint condition. NO wear, NO dings, no sign of prior ownership. Limited numbers were made between about 2003 and 2007.
Very nice highly figured Koa back and sides. Select Sitka Spruce top. Choice Mahogany neck. Brazilian Rosewood peghead overlay. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and saddle.
The appointments of this D-45 seem to be especially beautiful set against the Honey-Brown flamed Koa. Abalone purflings on top edge, soundhole rosette, along sides (top and back), back, endpin wedge, both sides of heel and along fingerboard extension.
Outside of the abalone purflings, the guitar has grained ivoroid outer bindings throughout entire guitar. Abalone hexagon inlays in fingerboard. Old style "CF Martin" abalone logo inlaid in peghead.
Now... I think you get the idea by now that this guitar is very beautiful AND in really great original condition. BUT - the best part of all is that this guitar is an especially great sounding guitar, with lots of punch, nice growling attack, balance, etc. This guitar would work great for a Bluegrass flatpicker, a singer/songwriter, a country band front-man, etc.
In short, this is a wonderful D-45.

1977 Martin HD-28 Second year of Herringbone Re-issue Guitar 'Sold'

This is a good player's guitar. Played avidly for 30 years at fiddle festivals over the Western U.S. One of the first years that Martin had re-issued the Herringbone trim on their D-28 guitars.
The finish shows some tell-tale signs of possibly being refinished by Martin back in the 1970's or early 1980's. We aren't completely sure, and the previous owner can't tell remember so well.
Anyway, it plays good and sounds real good, and is a bonefide 31-year old Martin HD-28.

2006 Martin HD-28 Guitar 'Sold'

Exceptional "new" condition. Clean as a pin - NO player wear, NO dings or dents. If it didn't have a strap button professionally installed in neck heel it would be no different than a brand new guitar! This is a very nice representative of the tried and true Herringbone D-28's. Crisp attack, quick response, tonal depth, power... it really has all the elements you look for in a good flatpicking guitar. It is NOT a muddy sounding guitar. This guitar sounds closer to a Collings D-2H than to a Martin HD-28.
Rosewood back and sides, select Sitka Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Forward, or "advanced", scalloped bracing. Diamond volute on back of peghead. Herringbone purfling around inside of top edge bindings. Dot inlays in fingerboard. Ok, there you have it... this is a very great HD-28. Oh, one more thing... it comes with warranty papers not filled out.

2001 Martin HD-28 Guitar 'Sold'

Very Good Condition. Rosewood back and sides, with select Sitka Spruce top with scalloped bracing and Herringbone purflings around top edge. Ebony fingerboard and bridge.
This guitar is set-up very well and plays and sounds great. There are some things to note about the finish - there is obvious wear on top and back, with areas of finish checking. There are also two areas where finish flaked off and french polish was applied to bare wood.
So... yes, it has the finish issues, but overall a fine one to use on stage or at jams. It has a very good sound.

2001 Martin HD-28 Vintage Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. This HD-28 "vintage" is a very popular guitar due to it's having most, if not all, of the pre-war "Herringbone" D-28 design, but with Indian Rosewood back and sides and Sitka Spruce top. This one is a great example, with almost no player wear. Guitar has obviously had great professional set-up, having an intonated Nut AND Saddle combination. The sound is very nice - balanced and powerful, with strong clear enunciated bass.

2001 Martin HD-28LSV Guitar 'Sold'

Exc condition. One-owner guitar that was well cared for. Some minor dings and player marks on the guitar, but not very many and none are worth worrying over. Frets are in great shape - probably recently milled and dressed. Action is very good, with plenty of saddle showing above the bridge. Does NOT need a neck reset. Strap button installed beside heel into headblock.
Herringbone top purflings. Multiple ivoroid body bindings. Ivoroid bound fingerboard and headstock. The designation, "LSV", stands for 'Large Soundhole Vintage'. This means the wood inside the soundhole rosette has been trimmed away, like Clarence White's old D-28. The 'vintage' appointments include things like: advanced scalloped bracing, 'thru'-saddle, old style tuners, aging toner in the Spruce top, antique'd bindings, 1 3/4" width of nut.
This guitar has a lot of sound. Punchy attack with good balance and full overtones. Nice playing action.

Choice Indian Rosewood back and sides with select Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. "Thru-saddle" bridge. Mahogany neck. "Zipper" backstrip.

This guitar is in very nice condition, with only very slight signs of playing on the frets and a few very small lacquer chips in back of peghead slots from changing strings. It is set up well, plays great and sounds great.

2004 Martin HD-28VS w/ 12th fret neck joint Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(-) condition. Like any HD-28V, this guitar offers many "pre-war" appointments, like scalloped bracing, etc. But this guitar is built like the earliest rare Martin 12-fret Dreadnauts, with the slightly elongated upper bout and the slotted headstock and the 1 3/4" width at nut. Rosewood back and sides, with select Sitka Spruce top, Mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard and bridge. "Cut diamonds" pattern inlaid in fingerboard.
This guitar was owned and used by a serious "up and coming" flatpicker, and does show signs of use at festivals and jams. The top is pretty clean, but has some "one player wear" on both sides of strings just ahead of bridge. Back is in fine original condition. Treble side shows some marring near the waist, and has one 3" crack repaired at same area. Original Martin nut and saddle. Currently has brass bridge pins with large abalone-inlaid heads, but we are happy to take them in trade for a set of Ebony pins upon request.
This is a fine sounding guitar, no kidding. It isn't shy, and it does have a very good solid attack backed up with developed depth of tone. These guitars sell new for several hundred more than a standard HD-28V... So, take advantage of a bargain when you see one and get this guitar back to the jams!

2005 Martin J-40 Guitar 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. Hardly any sign of prior use. There are just a few very small touch-marks here and there, but nothing bad at all. There is one area on back binding where lacquer has chipped off - about 1 1/2" long. It is hard to spot at first, but you can feel the edges of lacquer where it has chipped away.
"0000" body size with depth similar to a dreadnaut. Rosewood back and sides. Select Sitka Spruce top. Multiple white/black/white bindings throughout, with 8-ply showing on top edge of body, 5-ply on back, and 3-ply seen at sides of body, top face of fingerboard and peghead. Heel cap is white and shows 3-ply layering. Multiple wh/blk/wh end wedge.
Abalone soundhole rosette. Ebony fingerboard with abalone hexagon inlays. CF Martin logo inlaid in headstock. Gold tuners. Tortoise pickguard. Ebony bridge with intonated "boxed" bone saddle. Brazillian Rosewood peghead overlay.
We've had quite a few J-40's over the years. Most of them have a great presence, especially in the bass. But some of them seem to have the nice low-mids and lows at the expense of the treble. This one, however, is balanced very well. The bass is absolutely great, with a huge bouncy attack on the low A and E strings. The highs are strong and have a beautiful lyrical sound that the microphone will love.

This guitar has a few random dings here and there, but nothing big. Gold strap button installed in correct position in heel. End of peghead shows a significant chip in the lacquer. It was well cared for and it looks great. The action is fine for playing and it needs nothing.
Select Indian Rosewood back and sides, choice Sitka Spruce top and Mahogany neck. Ebony fingerboard and bridge. Abalone top purflings and soundhole rosette. Ivoroid bindings on top, back, fingerboard and headstock. Ivoroid heelcap. Gold open-back tuners.
The sound is very open and full. Many of the earlier J-40's were known for having an unbalanced "bottom-heavy" tone. Not this one - this guitar has great balance, great attack and great sound.

Ebony fingerboard with Rosewood bridge. Only a few marks against this guitar being "Excellent(+)" condition - it has a couple of small dings in the top, and incidental mark on back of neck, and a mild finish check running along center seam of top from bridge to binding (center seam in wood is not open).
