1935 Armstrong (Kay) Octave Mandolin Conversion from 6-string Archtop Guitar Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
Excellent conversion from Archtop Guitar to Octave Mandolin. Made in 1935, possibly by Kay, for Armstrong brand. Solid wood construction, with Mahogany Back, sides and neck, and a Spruce top.
Elaborate marquetry purflings around top edge. Peghead does show 2 of the original plugged 6-string holes, but not glaringly obvious at a glance. Neck was professionally shaved down a bit for the 8-str Octave Mandolin string configuration. Original pickguard is really cool multi-laminate plastic. The conversion work was done here in Missoula by George Weisel, and I have to say it is a great job!
These octave mandolins that have archtop bodies are preferred by many players for having more presence, as well as facilitating ease of playing due to positioning of left and right hands. Price reduced...

New Bolivian Custom Handmade Charango with All Solid Woods Mandolin 'Sold' |

Excellent sounding and playing South American Charango from Bolivia. Through many years in business we have sold Charangos, mostly as a novelty folk instrument. But these handmade Bolivian Charangos are excellent "Players" instruments that are quite well made and exhibit strong clear sound.

Solid woods, with carved bowl back made integral to the neck (from same piece of wood). Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Excellent Spruce top with see-thru pearloid pickguard and stylized "butterfly" soundholes with Rosewood and marquetry trim. Rosewood outer body bindings with wooden marquetry purflings.. Custom black top, with gloss lacquer, sunburst satin finish back sides & neck. Maple back and sides, spruce top. 1 3/16" wide nut. Multiple bound top with tortoise/black/white. The effect that the white layer of binding has on the tortoise is quite nice - it "backlights" the tortoise strip so that it comes alive with the reds and ambers that are more muted without the white line beneath. Ecxcellent playability and tone. w/ OHC |

Beautiful mandolin. Custom black top, with gloss lacquer, satin finish back sides & neck. Maple back and sides, spruce top. Tortoise top bindings w/ white purfling. The extra white line in the binding is definitely worth the cost - on a black top mandolin single tortoise binding fades into the background, while this multiple binding with white behind the tortoise really shows off the color and depth of the Tortoise! Nice looking mandolin. *Photos are of previous instrument. Listen to these sound samples... w/ OHC |

2006 Ellis F-5 Varnish - One-pc Back Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
Exceptional condition, workmanship and tone. We have been fortunate to have had a handful of Tom Ellis' mandolins over the last few years. ALL of them were great mandolins.
This mandolin is certainly among Tom's best. Beautiful in every way to the point that I keep wanting to use the word, "exquisite", over and over to describe it.
Red Spruce top, with highly figured one-piece Maple back, sides and neck. I think it is Red Maple, but not absolutely sure. Radiused Ebony fingerboard with traditional double-cut extension. Dot inlays in fingerboard. Peghead has perfect floral "fern-like" inlay under the Ellis script logo.
Ivoroid multiple bindings on body and peghead, with ivoroid binding along fingerboard. Gold Waverly tuners with solid pearl buttons. Gold engraved James tailpiece. Solid pearl nut. Small Ebony pickguard.
This mandolin looks better the closer you look at it... The carve lines are lovely the way the light reveals the perfection of the recurve and other areas. The color and the finish are also top-notch, with both working well to complete the "look".
Frets show some marks from previous owner, but are not really "worn" - certainly no fret work needs to be done.
The sound has all the elements - the sculpted attack, like a bubble popping softly yet cleanly, the tonal depth, the great highs, great chop, etc. I could go on and on, but in short, it is a wonderful sound.

One-pc figured Maple back with Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony radiused fingerboard, Ebony 2-pc bridge. Gold tailpiece and gold Waverly tuners. Comes with pickguard installed.
This instrument is reputed to be the last mandolin produced by Tom Ellis with a traditional Flowerpot inlay in headstock. The woods are beautiful, the color is perfect and the finish is lovely.
This is a very fine mandolin by Tom Ellis. It hasn't even been played enough to be truly opened up yet, but still has very nice sound. Great attack.
Set-up is very good - the mandolin plays easily. So... a great mandolin by a great builder w/ Ameritage Case |

Exc(+) Condition. This mandolin is really in great shape. The body just has a few random dings but is in excellent condition otherwise. Neck is in excellent shape, no fret wear. The back of the peghead has a little finish scraped away and has a small amount of lacquer checking. "Carroll Music #9" is etched in near the tuners on the back and also on the neckplate. This is probably a school music instrument that was never used. "Carroll" is engraved again on the back of the neck heel, but near the neck plate, where it won't interfere with playing. "#9" is faintly marked on the top of the peg head as well. |

c.2007 Giacomel J-5 Varnish Finish Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
Exc(+) condition. Only a few slight fingernail or pick marks here and there, and slight signs in the varnish finish where a tone guard had been attached.
Finely appointed, with most woods used being native to Mr Giacomel's home, Italy. Wooden bindings, figured Maple, Italian White Spruce. Giacomel employs no machine tools in the making of these instruments (less than 10 made per year), yet the precise cuts and fitting are much more perfect being made by hand than if they were a few degrees "more perfect" by machine.
This is a very beautiful piece of art that also sings with its own pure strength. Not simply relegated to a 'jazz' mandolin because of its stylings - it has great attack, gutteral depth, and power that any "great" instrument should have. The varnish finish is very nice, with an excellent lustre and a beautiful and telling thin application.
These sell for $12,500 as new instruments. Take advantage of this one in great original condition, for quite a savings...

Exc(-) condition. Mostly nice and original, but with some caveats. Original tuners with Handel inlaid ivoroid buttons. Original tailpiece, pickguard, and bridge.
Original finish throughout, but with addition of french polish over coat layer. This layer is mostly seen on peghead, but also on back of neck, and to a very slight degree on body. Again - mostly all original finish, but some shellac added by french polish method.
Neck heel shows signs of old break, with dark color added to disquise the repair. The break may be nearly impossible to see in photos, but it closely follows the very top edge of the darken area.
The frets are correct frets for the era, but could be original frets freshly milled, or excellent professional replacement.

c.1890's Gibson A-Model Mandolin 'Sold' |

Excellent condition. Here is a rare find! A nice example of Orville Gibson's earliest mandolins. This A-Model shows a unique original metal artwork on the peghead that most people say could be a "one-of-a-kind" design of moon and star. Original tuners (with original buttons), that work fine. Original tailpiece that may have been ordered with customer's initials. Original finish. Appears to be the original bridge. Original frets! It is possible the nut is also original. One repaired back crack near edge.
If you look closely at the back edge you will notice a sharper cut at edge from the recurve - later examples show a rounder edge. This mandolin came to us with no case, but we are happy to provide a good case that fits the mandolin well. w/ newer case. |

Exc(+) condition. Double Flowerpot inlaid in peghead and Handel inlaid ivoroid tuner buttons. Typical beautiful cherry sunburst shellac finish. The finish is in great shape and shows the tiny tell-tale spiderweb marks typical of these old instruments. Original small frets that show some denting, but are playable with no buzzing. This mandolin has never had back/side or top/side separation repair, like so many have. The binding is all original as well, and shows no breaks or repairs, like many do.
On the top, there are two slight checks in the wood that are not broken through. One is from inside middle of scroll, down toward the soundhole rosette - it is not separated, and does not flex. The other is a very slight check from the lower triangular body point, upward about an inch.
This mandolin is in great original condition and has been well cared for. It does not need any attention. Just buy it and enjoy it. The sound is very good.

1994 Gibson F-5 Bill Monroe Varnish Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
Excellent condition. #124 of 200. Label signed by Bill Monroe. This mandolin reminds me of how clean and precise the craftsmanship was when Gibsons were made in Bozeman, Montana. Made using select old Maple purchased by Steve Carlson years earlier.
Made under the watchful eye of Bruce Weber, these mandolins were slowly made over a 2 to 2 1/2 year period. There are a handful of the 200 that were made with lacquer finish, but the lion's share were made with spirit varnish, like this one.
Faithful to Bill Monroe's 1923 Gibson Lloyd Loar, the binding shows black line along sides of mandolin, instead of on top and back. Flowerpot inlay in peghead, along with The Gibson script logo, and solid pearl truss-rod cover with Bill Monroe engraved in it.
Highly figured aged Maple back, sides and neck, with select Spruce top. The traditional tobacco sunburst is perfect, and with the varnish really has a great look to it.

2001 Gibson F-5 Sam Bush Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
Exc(+) condition. Hardly any signs of previous ownership. Only very slight wear on the frets. Beautiful woods and sunburst finish! True to Sam Bush's original 1930's F-5, these models have some unique features:
Traditional fingerboard extension has been sawn off for ease of playing in the "sweet spot"; Spacing of strings at nut and at bridge are different - the pairs are slightly widened, to make all the strings appear almost evenly spaced acoss the nut and the bridge; Nut width is 1 3/16"; Back of neck has had finish removed to make it less sticky when playing; Gibson logo is oriented flat across the top of peghead; Ebony fingerboard has pearl block inlays.
We have had several of these mandolins since Gibson began to make them around 2001. Here is a chance to get one for a great bargain, as a new one now sells for $8995!
And yes, it is all set up and ready to go, and it sounds great. |

Exceptional original condition. No wear, no cracks, no repairs. One noticeable ding in the lacquer at the peak of headstock in back.
This is a very nice example mandolin from the old Flatiron/Gibson crew of Bozeman, Montana. The color and finish are beautifully applied - the finish is thin and hugging the wood grain. The Maple has dramatic figure. All aspects of the construction show high degree of precision.
We get asked all the time, 'when will you get in another Montana made Gibson or Flatiron'... Well, here it is, and a fine one, to boot!
Highly figured Maple back, sides and neck. Select Spruce top. Traditional Fern inlay. Dot inlays in flat Ebony fingerboard. Fully multiple bound with Ivoroid/black/ivoroid bindings. Gold Schaller tuners with solid pearl buttons.

We don't stock many low-priced Asian instruments here. But we've been selling these Kentucky mandolins for 20 years and have been very happy with their longevity, workmanship and tone. Every instrument we get here is always set-up by us. These "bargain" mandolins are no exception. I've just completed the same set-up as I would do on much more expensive mandolins - the nut slots and saddle slots are adjusted, the truss-rod adjusted, and the bridge fit and intonated.
These mandolins tune easy, play easy and don't have problems that require you to seek out a luthier before you can play them. w/ OHC |

Typical of Givens A-models, this instrument delivers a lot of sound, with good power and projection. The chop is good and solid, but the lyrical beauty and presence of any part of it exceeds most mandolins. In short, it is a very good mandolin.

Exc(-) condition. Width of fingerboard at nut is 1 1/32". This is a nice example A-3 from Robert L. Givens. Handmade in his shop, it exhibits many great characteristics. It is made from good Maple back, sides and neck, with Englemann Spruce cut by Bob Givens, himself. Ebony radiused fingerboard with dot inlays and original frets in good shape. Original handmade Givens Ebony bridge, and also the original tailpiece and Schaller tuners. The color is "Sheraton Brown". The top has several small nicks and dings in finish - probably from shipping at some point with a loosened tailpiece cover touching the top of mandolin in transit. The top shows some slight settling, but has been inspected and is stable. One repaired top crack at f-hole that was professionally done with good cosmetic touch-up. The tone and playability are great. You would have to pay lots more today for a new mandolin with this level of tone... Chad Fadely at our store ranks it "among the best".

Exc(+) condition. Here is a fine example of a Givens A-6 from the personal collection of Greg Boyd. Typical brilliant Flamed Maple, set off by the beautiful sunburst color. Select grade Englemann spruce top, from tree felled by Bob Givens. Everything is original and in fine condition: Gold hardware, Nut, Handmade Ebony Bridge, Small vintage style frets. Typical of the nice A-6 models from Givens, this mandolin shows off the elaborate hand-cut, hand-inlaid, and hand-engraved Torch inlaid in peghead, as well as the hand-cut snowflakes inlaid in the radiused Ebony fingerboard.
These mandolins are obviously great investments, as everyone who plays or hears them agree that they are producing tones that meet or surpasses those of mandolins selling for $14,000 to $15,000...!
Listen to the soundbite and you'll hear why we are always so keen on the mandolins from R.L. Givens. These soundbites were recorded with strings that are 3-to-5 years old, and still the great sound of the mandolin is clearly heard - the attack, the depth, and the expressive highs. w/ OHC |

1990 R.L. Givens A-6 Exceptional Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
Exceptional original condition. Here is a very nice mandolin offered up from Greg Boyd's private collection. It seems the need for a newer motorcycle is overpowering the need to keep his collection intact.
Excellent in every way, this mandolin exemplifies the reason Bob Givens will be noted in history as one of the great mandolin builders. Very high grade Figured Maple back, sides and neck, with Englemann Spruce top. Ebony fingerboard and bridge and peghead overlay. Multiple Ivoroid bindings on body, fingerboard and peghead.
There was no CnC machinery in Givens' shop, only the jigs made by hand by Givens, who even designed and built his own pantograph carvers for rough-carving the tops and backs instead of buying ready made machines to do the work.
Take a close look at the elaborate Torch inlaid in the peghead and the Snowflakes in the fingerboard... These are all designed, handcut and hand engraved by Bob Givens.
Even the Englemann Spruce was usually hand-harvested by Bob Givens or Liz Sedler.
Givens made a lot of "F" mandolins, as well as his numerous "A" models, but among the afficianados the A's are known for putting out an exceptionally great tone, as well as being finely built. The A-6 and some few A-6 Customs (along with his F-5's, of course), represent the epitome of his 30 years building mandolins.
This mandolin shows off the vivid red-gold sunburst Givens is known for, and has a truly wonderful voice. The sound has a very expressive lyrical quality as well as being powerful. w/ OHC |

Givens A-6 models: Handcut engraved Torch in Ebony peghead veneer, handcut engraved snowflakes in radiused Ebony fingerboard, Multiple ivoroid with black line bindings on body, fingerboard and peghead. Frets show only moderate wear, but do not need any attention - playability is great. Original Givens Ebony 2-pc bridge. Original gold plated Schaller tuners and gold plated tailpiece.
How do I begin to describe the tone of these great mandolins? 1992 R.L. Givens A-6 Custom Anniversary "30 Years" Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
Exceptional condition, exceptional tone. This is the Givens A-6 that was rated so highly on the "Mandolin Tasting" recordings from WinterGrass festival in Feb 2003, played by John Reischman. In fact, the following morning after the recordings, John Reischman stopped by our booth at the festival that year to tell us that, after recording over 60 instruments at the 'tasting', that there were only two that were "great" - THIS Givens A-6 and his own Loar F-5.
The only modification done to this mandolin is to have the fingerboard extension scalloped. It is in great shape and truly will go head-to-head with any other mandolin for sound.
Bob Givens had intended to make 10 of these blonde top "Anniversary" A-6 mandolins, to help celebrate his 30 years of hand building mandolins. Unfortunately he died rather suddenly and at much too young an age. Only 6 were completed.

2006 Weber Beartooth Custom Mandolin 'Sold' |

Exc(+) condition. This is a very nice condition mandolin. Minimal signs of prior ownership.
Made as a showpiece for the NAMM show in 2006, then offered up as the prize at a mandolin contest. A customer of ours who won the instrument, plays mandolin very well but is mainly a serious guitar player, and traded us this mandolin in to us toward a guitar we had.
Besides being a "Beartooth" model, which was discontinued a few years ago, it has lots of custom features: Custom "transparent slate" finish color on the strongly figured Maple back, sides and back of neck. Special white finish Spruce top. Ebony radiused fingerboard. Multiple tortoise bindings on top, back, along fingerboard and around headstock. Custom "filled" tailpiece.
This is a very good mandolin with great playability and lots of tone. It is set-up to play. w/ OHC |

New Weber Elite Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
This mandolin and others like it is the reason we've been so excited about Weber Mandolins lately. Ok, I admit that we've always liked the whole crew there, and have had many great mandolins for almost 12 years now... But in the last 2 1/2 years we have seen another level in the craft from Weber.
Beginning in 2006 Weber began to make many instruments from old seasoned woods, as well as searching for and paying for higher grades of newer tonewoods.
They didn't advertise this. They just relied on dealers like us to let the buyers know what is going on by showing them the product. We have been doing so for awhile now, and I can attest that the mandolins are being highly complimented by the most experienced players in the business...
This Weber 'Elite' has just so many things going for it that they are hard to remember them all, but I'll try:
Red Spruce top / 1-pc Old Wood back, sides and neck / Half herringbone 'roped' purflings on top and back / Bound f-holes / Scalloped fingerboard extension / Custom 'filled' tailpiece / Custom Color / Hand-rubbed Spirit Varnish finish.
It looks great - feels great, too... But the best part is the sound. It just 'has that sound'. Most of the very few 'Elite' models that Weber has produced have tone bar bracing, but this one is x-braced.

New Weber Gallatin A Mandolin 'Sold' |
|
New. Figured Maple back, sides and neck. Select Sitka Spruce top. Nice brown color under the matte finish. Unbound top and back. Radiused Ebony fingerboard. Ebony adjustable bridge. Nickel 1-pc cast tailpiece. Weber logo inlaid in pearl in headstock. Nickel tuners.
These are very nice mandolins at a nice low price. During the past few years of recession, Weber actually re-designed several models to have MORE desirable features for LESS money.
Compared to the earlier Gallatin A's, these new ones are quite nice. They are made with figured Maple back, sides and neck, instead of Mahogany; Radiused fingerboard instead of flat; Weber logo inlaid with Pearl, instead of a decal; nice finish color, instead of just natural wood color.
In addition to the appointments, these mandolins will go head to head with mandolins costing over $2000.
The tone is very good, the materials are very good, and the set-up and playability are very good...
* We have a hard time keeping these in stock lately. They tend to sell very fast. We've anticipated the fast sales of these and have ordered quite a few of them to come into our stock on a regular basis. So... if you click to order one, it may be the "next" one coming into stock. You can always call us to get the current scoop of what is here and what is 'about to arrive'.

Exc. condition except for 3 top cracks that have been expertly repaired. (see photos) This instrument has never been played. John did a great job and now the mandolin plays and sounds like new. Spruce top, mahogany back, sides & neck. Scale length is 23.5 inches. Like New condition. NO WEAR! Western Red Cedar top, Tone-bar bracing, radiused fingerboard w/ dot inlays and traditional fingerboard extension scalloped. Flowerpot inlay in peghead. Old-style Weber script logo. Ebony pickguard made "bi-level" to match scalloping of fingerboard. Custom color. Matte finish is a further option choice that some people choose. w/ OHCWeber tone-bar instruments sound great with any top wood, but the Cedar seems to impart an instant satisfaction of woody tone as well as effective stage projection. Couple that with a 2-pc bridge and you get a mandolin worthy of taking with you when you leave your Gilchrist at home - just ask Chad here at our store. We usually have Webers similar to these in stock, or on order from Weber, and are happy to discuss them with you... When you play one you'll understand why they are very popular purchases for serious performing mandolinists. On Sale - |

This is an excellent to "eat up" a microphone. The finish was removed from back of neck at the factory, and tongue oil finish applied for "faster" feel.

New Weber Yellowstone F Old Woods - Honey Tortoise Mandolin 'Sold' |

New. "Honey Tortoise" custom model. Made with old cured Spruce and Maple tonewoods that are approx. 65 - 85 years old.
Strong Maple figure in the back, sides and neck. Select old wood Sitka Spruce top. Radiused Ebony fingerboard with traditional double-cut extension. Small leaf bud inlays in fingerboard. Ebony 2-pc adjustable bridge. Nickel 1-pc cast tailpiece. Nickel tuners.
The Weber logo inlaid in Ebony peghead overlay, along with Weber's unique Flowerpot inlay below the logo. Tortoise multiple bindings, with multiple line showing on sides of body and face of peghead.
*The Honey-Amber coloration is very nicely complimented by the tortoise bindings. And... the way this old wood takes the color dyes is very satisfying - it lets you know you are dealing with old tonewoods, especially on the Spruce top.
Soundwise, this is a very, very good mandolin. Great attack, great tonal depth, beautifully sweet highs, and all with lots of power when you want it.
We'll have sound samples as soon as possible.
