Gibson A-12 Mandolin 'Sold'

Exc condition. This is the much talked about Gibson model that is unsure if it is an "A" or an "F". Normal placement for scroll and points, and normal "F" style peghead... But the scroll is a solid piece, with no "curl". Bound on top and fingerboard with cream binding. Also has a cream heelcap. The one-piece Maple back has some bird'seye figure. Spruce top has lots of silk figure. Rosewood fingerboard has dot inlays and double-cut traditional extension. Original tuners work well.      Excellent condition. This is a nice example of the white-face A-3. Replaced copy tailpiece, otherwise all original. Original ivoroid pickguard and clamp, original bridge, original tuners with original ivoroid buttons, and original hard case.
The finish is in great original condition, with only some slight player wear where arm comes across for playing. Two back cracks have been professionally repaired and are certainly not obvious or ugly. Back of neck is in great shape - none of the usual wear you normally see.

1916 Gibson A-4 Mandolin 'Sold'

Exc(-) condition. Mostly nice and original, but with some caveats. Original tuners with Handel inlaid ivoroid buttons. Original tailpiece, pickguard, and bridge.
Original finish throughout, but with addition of french polish over coat layer. This layer is mostly seen on peghead, but also on back of neck, and to a very slight degree on body. Again - mostly all original finish, but some shellac added by french polish method.
Neck heel shows signs of old break, with dark color added to disquise the repair. The break may be nearly impossible to see in photos, but it closely follows the very top edge of the darken area.
The frets are correct frets for the era, but could be original frets freshly milled, or excellent professional replacement.
This instrument is set-up very nicely and sounds exceptionally good.

c.1890's Gibson A-Model Mandolin 'Sold'

Excellent condition. Here is a rare find! A nice example of Orville Gibson's earliest mandolins. This A-Model shows a unique original metal artwork on the peghead that most people say could be a "one-of-a-kind" design of moon and star. Original tuners (with original buttons), that work fine. Original tailpiece that may have been ordered with customer's initials. Original finish. Appears to be the original bridge. Original frets! It is possible the nut is also original. One repaired back crack near edge.
If you look closely at the back edge you will notice a sharper cut at edge from the recurve - later examples show a rounder edge. This mandolin came to us with no case, but we are happy to provide a good case that fits the mandolin well.

1950 Gibson F-12 Mandolin 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. High-grade figured Maple back sides. Mahogany neck. Regraduated and refinished by Randy Wood in 1977. Mr Wood also vaulted the fingerboard over the Spruce top. Original neck with added Fern and "The Gibson" logo. The inlay work is great! The sunburst finish work is great! The best part is the regraduations to the top and to the original braces by Randy Wood. Mr Wood definitely knows this job well, and the result is a very good sound. Comes with the original rectangular hardshell case. This mandolin looks and plays like a much older Gibson F without re-financing your house.

1912 Gibson F-2 Mandolin 'Sold'

Very Good (+) condition. Pretty nice example of Gibson's simpler oval hole F-model.
Black top with cherry back and sides. Grain appears to be Adirondack Red Spruce top, with Birch back and sides and Cypress neck. Ebony fingerboard. Blackened back and top of peghead. Mostly all original, except individual saddle pieces from bridge were removed to fit a "Shadow" blade pickup into the slot. The Shadow pickup takes a 1/8" cable.
Peghead shows scars on the face from some wear and also has had the main peghead scroll and the small peghead scroll broken off and reattached. Very little wear on the back of neck, with only some rub-thru on sides under the fingerboard binding. Black top shows one repaired crack, up to the left as you look at soundhole rosette.
Small frets with only slight wear. Beautiful soundhole rosette of herringbone and ivoroid. Original Handel tuners with intricate insets of wire and abalone flowers. Original pickguard is attached and not warped or rotted. Original tailpiece is in great shape.
Comes in good fitting later Gibson F-5 case ( '50's or 1960's origin).

1915 Gibson F-4 Mandolin 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. Double Flowerpot inlaid in peghead and Handel inlaid ivoroid tuner buttons. Typical beautiful cherry sunburst shellac finish. The finish is in great shape and shows the tiny tell-tale spiderweb marks typical of these old instruments. Original small frets that show some denting, but are playable with no buzzing. This mandolin has never had back/side or top/side separation repair, like so many have. The binding is all original as well, and shows no breaks or repairs, like many do.
On the top, there are two slight checks in the wood that are not broken through. One is from inside middle of scroll, down toward the soundhole rosette - it is not separated, and does not flex. The other is a very slight check from the lower triangular body point, upward about an inch.
This mandolin is in great original condition and has been well cared for. It does not need any attention. Just buy it and enjoy it. The sound is very good.

1994 Gibson F-5 Bill Monroe Varnish Mandolin 'Sold'

Excellent condition. #124 of 200. Label signed by Bill Monroe. This mandolin reminds me of how clean and precise the craftsmanship was when Gibsons were made in Bozeman, Montana. Made using select old Maple purchased by Steve Carlson years earlier.
Made under the watchful eye of Bruce Weber, these mandolins were slowly made over a 2 to 2 1/2 year period. There are a handful of the 200 that were made with lacquer finish, but the lion's share were made with spirit varnish, like this one.
Faithful to Bill Monroe's 1923 Gibson Lloyd Loar, the binding shows black line along sides of mandolin, instead of on top and back. Flowerpot inlay in peghead, along with The Gibson script logo, and solid pearl truss-rod cover with Bill Monroe engraved in it.
Highly figured aged Maple back, sides and neck, with select Spruce top. The traditional tobacco sunburst is perfect, and with the varnish really has a great look to it.
The tone is strong and well developed over time, even though there is no obvious player wear.

1994 Gibson F-5 Bill Monroe Varnish Mandolin 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. #124 of 200 made. One-owner mandolin. The only sign of prior ownership are few very small chips in the finish at top peak of back of peghead. No fret wear, no scratches.
I remember standing with Bruce Weber and Ren Ferguson in the old Gibson/Flatiron shop in Bozeman, MT, in about 1985 or 1986, and being shown a huge batch of high-grade old Maple that they had purchased. When I asked if we could order mandolins made with this old cured tonewood, Ren Ferguson told me that they had bought it.for a large "special" run of mandolins that they would build in the future. In 1992 Gibson announced that they would build 200 F-5's built like Bill Monroe's original Gibson F-5 Loar. This old wood was used in their construction.
Highly figured old cured Maple back, sides and neck. Highly select Spruce top with excellent medullary rays. Sunburst. Ebony paghead overlay, fingerboard and bridge. Pearl dot inlays in fingerboard. Abalone and Pearl traditional flowerpot inlay in peghead. The Gibson pearl inlay in peghead. Multiple bindings, with black line seen at sides of body and fingerboard, like Bill Monroe's Loar. Silver plated Schaller tuners with solid pearl buttons. Silver plated 2-pc tailpiece with The Gibson engraved in cover. Silver plated bridge adjusters. Varnish finish. Solid pearl truss-rod cover with Bill Monroe signature engraved. Flat fingerboard with traditional double-cut extension.
This mandolin plays real "easy". The neck profile is nice and slim. The attack is fast and sure, and the tone is the good 'ol wooden bell Gibson sound. It is a fine mandolin, for sure.
The case that comes with this instrument is the original hard case, with metal placque denoting special run of Bill Monroe signature F-5, and showing #124 of 200. Not only that, but this case is quite valuable on the used market, as it closely resembles the old original "Loar" cases.

2001 Gibson F-5 Sam Bush Mandolin 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. Hardly any signs of previous ownership. Only very slight wear on the frets. Beautiful woods and sunburst finish! True to Sam Bush's original 1930's F-5, these models have some unique features:
Traditional fingerboard extension has been sawn off for ease of playing in the "sweet spot"; Spacing of strings at nut and at bridge are different - the pairs are slightly widened, to make all the strings appear almost evenly spaced acoss the nut and the bridge; Nut width is 1 3/16"; Back of neck has had finish removed to make it less sticky when playing; Gibson logo is oriented flat across the top of peghead; Ebony fingerboard has pearl block inlays.
We have had several of these mandolins since Gibson began to make them around 2001. Here is a chance to get one for a great bargain, as a new one now sells for $8995!
And yes, it is all set up and ready to go, and it sounds great.

New Gibson Gibson F-5 Fern Varnish Finish Mandolin 'Sold'

Exceptional condition. This is a very fine representative mandolin from Gibson. Label signed by Danny Roberts. Beautiful Sunburst with antiqued bindings. No wear, no dings, and no scratches. Very nice highly figured Maple back, sides and neck, with Red Spruce top. Gold Waverly tuners. Pickguard has no antique finish on bindings, so they appear "whiter". Original gold Gibson tailpiece has no wear. Original frets have no wear.
The sound of this mandolin is really quite good. Smooth attack that is still fast and articulated, with lots of depth, balance and power.
