 Armstrong (Kay) Octave Mandolin 1
View Detail
1935 Armstrong (Kay) Octave Mandolin Conversion from 6-string Archtop Guitar Mandolin 'Sold'

Excellent conversion from Archtop Guitar to Octave Mandolin. Made in 1935, possibly by Kay, for Armstrong brand. Solid wood construction, with Mahogany Back, sides and neck, and a Spruce top.
Elaborate marquetry purflings around top edge. Peghead does show 2 of the original plugged 6-string holes, but not glaringly obvious at a glance. Neck was professionally shaved down a bit for the 8-str Octave Mandolin string configuration. Original pickguard is really cool multi-laminate plastic. The conversion work was done here in Missoula by George Weisel, and I have to say it is a great job!
These octave mandolins that have archtop bodies are preferred by many players for having more presence, as well as facilitating ease of  playing due to positioning of left and right hands. Price reduced...

New Don Dryer A-5 Mandolin 'Sold'

New. This is a great early mandolin from a local builder, Don Dryer. We have had the pleasure of watching Don's instruments evolve into beautifully crafted tone producers in just a few short years. Radiused Ebony fingerboard with pearl dot position markers. 1 1/8" width at nut. Flowerpot inlaid in peghead.

This mandolin has only been here a few short days, but already local players who've tried it are quite impressed. We see lots and lots of good mandolins through here, yet we are impressed with this one, as well.

2006 Ellis F-5 Varnish - One-pc Back Mandolin 'Sold'

Exceptional condition, workmanship and tone. We have been fortunate to have had a handful of Tom Ellis' mandolins over the last few years. ALL of them were great mandolins.
This mandolin is certainly among Tom's best. Beautiful in every way to the point that I keep wanting to use the word, "exquisite", over and over to describe it.
Red Spruce top, with highly figured one-piece Maple back, sides and neck. I think it is Red Maple, but not absolutely sure. Radiused Ebony fingerboard with traditional double-cut extension. Dot inlays in fingerboard. Peghead has perfect floral "fern-like" inlay under the Ellis script logo.
Ivoroid multiple bindings on body and peghead, with ivoroid binding along fingerboard. Gold Waverly tuners with solid pearl buttons. Gold engraved James tailpiece. Solid pearl nut. Small Ebony pickguard.
This mandolin looks better the closer you look at it... The carve lines are lovely the way the light reveals the perfection of the recurve and other areas. The color and the finish are also top-notch, with both working well to complete the "look".
Frets show some marks from previous owner, but are not really "worn" - certainly no fret work needs to be done.
The sound has all the elements - the sculpted attack, like a bubble popping softly yet cleanly, the tonal depth, the great highs, great chop, etc. I could go on and on, but in short, it is a wonderful sound.

One-pc figured Maple back with Adirondack Red Spruce top. Ebony radiused fingerboard, Ebony 2-pc bridge. Gold tailpiece and gold Waverly tuners. Comes with pickguard installed.
This instrument is reputed to be the last mandolin produced by Tom Ellis with a traditional Flowerpot inlay in headstock. The woods are beautiful, the color is perfect and the finish is lovely.
This is a very fine mandolin by Tom Ellis. It hasn't even been played enough to be truly opened up yet, but still has very nice sound. Great attack.
Set-up is very good - the mandolin plays easily. So... a great mandolin by a great builder

The back of the peghead has a little finish scraped away and has a small amount of lacquer checking. "Carroll Music #9" is etched in near the tuners on the back and also on the neckplate. This is probably a school music instrument that was never used. "Carroll" is engraved again on the back of the neck heel, but near the neck plate, where it won't interfere with playing. "#9" is faintly marked on the top of the peg head as well.
Original 3-tone Fender sunburst. 4-layer pickguard in beautiful original condition. Pickups are untouched. Original Kluson "deluxe" tuners in great shape. Original bridge, knobs and "ashtray" bridge cover.

c.2007 Giacomel J-5 Varnish Finish Mandolin 'Sold'

Exc(+) condition. Only a few slight fingernail or pick marks here and there, and slight signs in the varnish finish where a tone guard had been attached.
Finely appointed, with most woods used being native to Mr Giacomel's home, Italy. Wooden bindings, figured Maple, Italian White Spruce. Giacomel employs no machine tools in the making of these instruments (less than 10 made per year), yet the precise cuts and fitting are much more perfect being made by hand than if they were a few degrees "more perfect" by machine.
This is a very beautiful piece of art that also sings with its own pure strength. Not simply relegated to a 'jazz' mandolin because of its stylings - it has great attack, gutteral depth, and power that any "great" instrument should have.
The varnish finish is very nice, with an excellent lustre and a beautiful and telling thin application.

Exc(+) Condition. Top is in great shape. The back and sides are nice as well. The only signs of any use on this mandolin are small amounts of fret wear and a ding on the back of the peghead. The back of neck has been reworked, with finish removed from back of neck and just a light oil finish over the wood... some people refer to this as a "speed neck". The neck feels great.
Select Spruce top with nice sunburst finish. High-grade Maple back, sides and neck. The mandolin is fully multiple-bound with antique'd grained Ivoroid. 2-pc. flamed Maple neck with Ebony stringer. Ebony Radiused fretboard with Pearl dot inlays. Traditional "Flower Pot" inlay in peghead. 1 3/16" width at nut. Nickel Schaller tuners. Strap button installed in heel.
This mandolin was made with great attention to detail by local Missoula, MT luthier John Joyner. The sound is well balanced, clean and crisp attack with plenty of depth and good projection.

We don't stock many low-priced Asian instruments here. But we've been selling these Kentucky mandolins for 20 years and have been very happy with their longevity, workmanship and tone.
Every instrument we get here is always set-up by us. These "bargain" mandolins are no exception. I've just completed the same set-up as I would do on much more expensive mandolins - the nut slots and saddle slots are adjusted, the truss-rod adjusted, and the bridge fit and intonated.
These mandolins tune easy, play easy and don't have problems that require you to seek out a luthier before you can play them.

Exc(-) condition. This mandolin is in very nice condition and has a very lovely sound. There is only minor evidence of prior playing. It does have a cleanly repaired top crack that ran parallel to the top's center seam. This crack ran from bridge to binding under tailpiece. It isn't very noticeable - in fact, we are having problems trying to take a photo that shows it. This crack is very nicely repaired and the top is tight and even on both sides of crack.
Fully bound with multiple ivoroid/black/ivoroid bindings - top, back, fingerboard and headstock. Kimble abalone logo and elaborate Flowerpot inlaid into headstock. Nickel Schaller tuners with pearlescent buttons. Ebony radiused fingerboard that has the extension scalloped at 19th fret. Small pearl dots. Ebony pickguard with multiple binding to match mandolin. Nickel one-pc Allen tailpiece.
Highly figured Maple back, sides and neck. Red Spruce top. Ebony strap button professionally installed in heel.
As I've pointed out above, this is a very good mandolin. Lots of tone and expression, lots of volume and projection. I'll put it another way... if I didn't need to put a new roof on the store this year I'd be trying to figure out how to keep this one.

Having made flutes since the 1970s, Mr. Olwell has many celebrity players endorsing his instruments, including Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull.      For some time in the 1970's, Michael Kimnetzer (Nugget Mandolins), worked at the OME shop in Boulder, Colorado. Perhaps partly because he already had a background in making good mandolins, OME made a decision to produce some mandolins. Michael Kimnetzer did work on designing these mandolins and also built jigs and tooling for the project. Furthermore, Michael tells me he handbuilt 5 prototypes at their shop. The original 5 OME mandolin prototypes made by Michael Kimnetzer are ALL accounted for, with 3 still in the hands of the original owners. This nice example we are selling here was NOT built by Mr Kimnetzer, but was built at OME on Mr Kimnetzer's tooling...
There is no serial number, no information under the top, etc, that we can find.
Nice tone with a dark and very woody sound. Just came back from the shop with nice new fret job and new nut.

Ebony bridge. Comes with factory installed piezo pickup and strap buttons. Gold Schaller tuners, gold 1-pc tailpiece and strap button.
