Description

1 1/8″ width at nut.
This is a very special instrument. We do not know the whole story behind it, but it was owned and used by a noted poster artist from the northwest, famous for years of Weiser festival t-shirts, posters, logos etc. I am referring to the noted Brad Pinkerton, who passed away in recent years. Before he died, he sold this mandolin to a good friend of his.
This is mainly (neck, top, sides) a 1930’s Gibson A-50 mandolin… but this one has a 1918 Maple Gibson mandolin back with label intact that was installed at a much later date, possibly 1970’s, 80’s etc.
Before we go any further, we need to state that this is a really great sounding mandolin, possibly beating every A-40 or A-50 we have ever had through this store. The attachment of the older back is technically “ok” but not a “nice” job. It shows wood sanded down to match, and shows glue lines etc. Tuners have been changed to more recent nickel Schaller tuners. Rare old The Gibson tailpiece instead of more oft seen clamshell tailpiece. Unsure about bridge history. At top of peghead, The Gibson script logo inlaid in pearl. Brazilian rosewood flat fingerboard. Brown sunburst top with lots of player wear and scratches. Back shows lots of maple figure. Frets are in good shape with some denting. For sound power, this mandolin beats many, many old Gibson mandolins.
