Made 1916  /  VG+ Condition

This 1916 John M. Slavens violin is pretty nice, both for its materials and workmanship and for its playability and tone. It has no problems.

Traditionally built, using high grade Spruce for the top, strongly figured Maple for back, sides and neck. Ebony fittings.
The Ebony pegs have Paris Eye inset into each peg button. The Ebony tailpiece has 4 fine tuners installed.

The pegbox is pretty unique and should be mentioned… Mr Slavens contoured the main sides of the scroll opposite to how most makers treat this area.
Most traditional violin luthiers will always “flute” the outer sides of the scroll with a curved, scooping gouge. It makes for the sides to have a concave appearance…
BUT – Mr Slavens makes his scroll with the sides radiused outwardly, making the sides of the scroll convex. This is an entirely distinctive technique that is very rare to see.

There are no cracks or any other big repairs. There is one very minor repaired wood separation about 1/2″ long, from the large lower hole in the treble f-hole, up to the purfling.

This violin is set up to play and sounds good, with good balanced tone and a robust voice. It comes with a good case.
