This 50 year old Martin D-28 has been played and has some ageing and playing wear but is in great playing shape with no cracks or previous crack repairs. Spruce top, Indian Rosewood back and sides, and a rounded “V” profile Mahogany neck. This guitar is coming to us from a bluegrass playing couple in our area. This guitar was owned and used for years at jams, performances, etc., and still in great shape and with great full sound.
The Rosewood peghead overlay features the CFMartin logo decal at the top. Original nickel Grover Rotomatic tuners. Bone nut. Diamond volute in back of peghead. Ebony fingerboard has graduated pearl dot inlays and cream side dot position markers on the bass side of the fingerboard. Rounded “V” profile Mahogany neck is in good shape with a minimal amount of wear in the first position on back and some very slight wear on the frets in first position (no deep Vee dents)! Neck profile is a comfortable rounded “Vee”. Cream heel cap. This neck has had a professional neck reset that looks perfect.
The top is an elevated grade – probably Engelmann Spruce or Red Spruce. This top shows wonderfully chatoyant patterns that leap out at you as you change the viewing angle. There is also good grain variance from side to side. This top is uncracked and never repaired. It does have a few tiny dings and two light areas of rash in the finish – possibly from bumping into a microphone screen, or similar. There are snaky lines of finish checking around the top. Black pickguard. Appears to be the original Ebony bridge with newer perfect intonated bone saddle and Ebony bridge pins.
The back and sides have NO cracks and no repairs. The Rosewood has nice grain and color. The body is bound with antiqued white outer bindings with inside purfling of multiple black/white lines. Multiple end wedge at end pin. Ebony end pin with pearl dot. No strap button installed in neck heel. This guitar has been out in the weather at numerous bluegrass picking sessions and performances and is still in great shape.
