“Claw Grass” style banjo
Open back OR Resonator
“Twenty Ten” Tone Ring
This 2014 Deering Eagle II banjo is a very nice utility banjo. It was designed with a “ClawGrass” player in mind. In other words, it is a convertible banjo from Open Back to Resonator style.
The rim is a serious 11/16″ 3-ply hard Maple rim with 24 shoes mounted on the outside of the rim, for the hooks and nuts to go thru. These shoes allow the banjo to be played as an open back banjo for “old time 3-finger” playing, or for drop thumb clawhammer playing.
Or
You can undo the hooks and nuts and fit the 2-pc plate flange beneath those shoes. Now when you attach the resonator you have a bluegrass style banjo that works well with bluegrass 3-finger playing.
Maple neck, rim and resonator. Blackened peghead veneer shows Deering inlaid at top in a banner and a more complex engraved floral pedestal inlaid in center. White/Black truss rod cover just above the nut. Nickel Planetary tuners with matching cream buttons.
The nut appears to be graphite. Ebony flat fingerboard with black binding. Baroque engraved inlays in fingerboard.
All nickel parts. “Twenty Ten” tone ring fit to rim. Currently has the original Deering factory set-up, with a Deering fibreskyn head mounted over the Twenty Ten tone ring. Original Deering bridge.
This is a good banjo. There is at least one video of Jens Krueger playing one and making it sound fabulous!
Comes all set up to play and with its original hard case.
