Great pre-owned mandolin from Idaho builder A. Lawrence Smart. Rich and woody tone.
Varnish finish. Engelmann Spruce top. Strikingly beautiful figured two-piece Maple back and flamed Maple sides. Highly figured flamed Maple neck. “Speed neck” on back of Maple neck which has a lovely rounded V profile. Ebony peghead overlay with A.L.S. logo inlaid at top. Pearl and abalone engraved flowerpot in peghead. Ivoroid multiple binding throughout— multiple lines showing on top face of peghead, fingerboard, Ebony pickguard, and body top and back. Ebony truss rod cover. Comfortably radiused Ebony fingerboard with abalone dot position markers. Classic double-cut fingerboard with last few frets scalloped away. Gold EVO fretwire means even though this mandolin has been heartily played, frets are in great shape. Bone nut. Ebony adjustable bridge. Silver James tailpiece with A.L. Smart engraved. Nickel tuners with matching pearloid buttons.
This mandolin is in great repair but does show some signs of wear. Varnish throughout mandolin shows handling marks and dings but nothing serious. There are the intials “B.D.” on the top though these are very hard to see. This mandolin was sent to Ron Stewart who removed the back and adjusted the graduation and tone bars. Locating pin holes on the back have been filled.
Pickup installed and functioning means this mandolin is stage-ready! Smart mandolins have a great reputation for hearty, balanced tone. This one has a healthy chop and beautiful highs. Upon its arrival it clearly presented itself as one of the finest mandolins in our store.
