Sunburst / One-pc Bird’seye Maple back
This 2016 Collings MF-5 mandolin is made with great woods. Custom ordered with spectacular bird’s eye figured Maple one-piece back. As with the back, the Maple sides and neck also show off this same great bird’s eye Maple figure. The top is a select high grade Adirondack Red Spruce top. Multiple ivoroid bindings throughout the mandolin, including peghead, fingerboard and top and back edges of the body. The phrase, “multiple bindings”, means there is a black accent line seen at the sides of the entire mandolin. Typical of instruments from Collings it has a beautiful sunburst finish.
The Ebony peghead veneer has pearl Collings logo at top and a custom ordered pearl flourish inlaid in center. Truss-rod access is just above the bone nut and has an Ebony removeable cover. As we mentioned above, the top edge of the peghead is bound in ivoroid. Excellent Silver Waverly open-back tuners with ivoroid buttons. These wonderful tuners are handmade in Bozeman, Montana. The Ebony radiused fingerboard has graduated M.O.P inlays and small black side dot position markers on the bass side of the fingerboard. The bird’s eye Maple neck has a comfortable rounded “V” profile.
The Adirondack Spruce top is in great shape with only a couple dings. It has a traditional pre-war style adjustable Ebony 2-pc bridge and Nickel tailpiece. Ebony end pin.
This instrument is in really great shape with only slight wear in certain areas.
Edge of peghead – There is slight amount of finish marring right on the crisp back edge of the peghead. This is very slight and does not need anything done to it.
Back of Scroll – Slight mars in finish from an attached strap looping through the scroll. This is a slight problem that needs no attention
There is no structural damage, no cracks or repairs, etc.
And, as we mentioned earlier, NO fret wear!
This 2016 MF-5 sounds great and is setup very nicely.
If ordered today as a new instrument from Collings, it would cost $9,950.00.
