This 1920’s Gibson F-2 mandolin is one that was built by Gibson in the 1920’s. It was sent back to Gibson for refinishing somewhere around the mid-1950’s. Gibson did a complete refinish of the mandolin as well as replacing the original parts with new Nut, Tuners, Bridge, Pickguard and Tailpiece. The frets are in good shape for playing.

* Anytime an instrument shows signs of being refinished, you can sometimes figure out “why” they went to the trouble and expense to do the refinishing. In the case of this particular mandolin, we are suggesting that the neck needed replacing. We believe it was sent back to Gibson around the early ’50’s for a new neck and new finish and new parts. This newer Gibson neck has a slightly larger peghead, which means the instrument no longer goes into its original case easily. We’ve mated the mandolin with a newer Saga “Red Line” reissue hard case that is designed to be a close copy of the old original Gibson mandolin cases.

The Blackened Peghead shows The Gibson pearl logo inlaid at top of PH. The flat Ebony fingerboard has a Double-Cut extension. The frets appear to be original. The F.B. is bound with single cream binding and inlaid with large pearl dots. Solid Ebony abbreviated pickguard. Small dot position markers on bass side of fingerboard. The fingerboard extension is built integral to the top, instead of vaulted over the top. This is a truss-rod model, with access cover just above the nut. The peghead face and the Spruce top show original lacquer, with the back of the neck showing refinish along with the Birch sides and back showing refinish.

The body is figured Birch with Mahogany Neck and Spruce top. The sound is very good and even has “chop” capabilities.
