This new Blues Hardware Octave Mandolin, his 5th example, is a wonderful tone producer. Tom Sheehy is a very inventive maker, with his instruments showing off his abilities in innovations that work quite well.
Check out the “f-holes”… You can quickly see that they are unique and unlike other f-holes you’ve seen. These are Elliptical Sound Ports that are a wonder of engineering and construction. The main function of f-holes is: letting sound pressures out of the body, and also providing a French Curve edge for various frequency wavelengths to find a sympathetic place to enhance resonance, and to leave the center of the top to be an unbroken springboard of flinging notes out of the instrument. These elliptical sound ports do the same thing, but I believe they are mod=re effective than normal f-holes, in that they are more multi-dimensional. We hear these as being quite great sounding… and we favor them greatly over normal f-holes…
