Description
Exc(+) condition. SN: 4130-21.
1 3/16″ width at nut. All original lacquer, with no Finish Checking.
This is a very nice example of a post war Gibson A-model mandolin.
Sunburst finish. Beautiful bird’s-eye Maple back. Spruce top has very good grain figure. Maple neck. The sides and back of neck are darkened, with great sunburst on the top and back.
White bindings around top and back and along fingerboard antique’d to a nice creamy color. Original open back tuners in good working order with newer cream matching buttons. Gibson logo decal at top of tapered peghead. Rosewood RADIUSED fingerboard with pearl dot inlay and fresh EVO frets. Original Blk/wh/blk/wh/blk beveled pickguard, original Brazilian Rosewood adjustable bridge, original clamshell tailpiece.
Negatives: There are a few random dings here and there, and one wood check near heel on back near headblock (can’t travel because headblock reinforces).
Positives: very great original condition. Professional recent fret job, including radiusing the fingerboard, installing EVO frets, and making a perfect new bone nut.
Tone & Playability: Both are very high. This mandolin’s attack is solid, intonated and strong – the sound travels across our showroom and back to your ear with light touch playing.
Comes with more recent teardrop Hard Case in great shape.
Here is an audio clip of our friend Isaac Callender playing this fine instrument when he stopped in for a visit in early May 2017.
And, in July 2017, Bill Parker demonstrating this same mandolin.
