This 2019 Deering Calico banjo is in wonderful condition. It is an All Maple construction banjo. The highly figured Maple neck, resonator and rim are quite luscious. The rim inside wall is slightly tapered to increase projection of the sound.
The peghead has a Gabon Ebony veneer that is bound with white binding with black line seen underneath. The peghead face has the “Deering” logo in the upper lobe, and is engraved onto a banner design. Above and below are clever inlays of “f-holes”. Truss rod access above the bone nut.
Flat ebony fingerboard with pearl “f-hole” design inlays. “Calico” is very nicely engraved onto a scroll at the 19th fret. The fingerboard is bound with grained ivoroid that has a colorful marquetry strip underneath the binding. The heelcap is also ivoroid and is bound with the same colored purfling. The resonator also has this binding above and below, with the colorful wood purfling seen along the sides.
The back of maple resonator is a one-piece fabulous veneer. The grade of figure in the Maple is very nice and is seen throughout the instrument from the rim to the resonator and back of the neck. The figure has a depth that changes and shimmers as it is moved.
Pre-war flathead style tone ring and one-piece flange. The head has very little play wear. This is a very clean and cared-for instrument with almost no signs of prior playing. It is well set up and sounds great.
Comes with a hard shell case.
