This rare guitar has the body shape of a 3/4 size L-1 but is stamped LG 3/4 inside. Despite the confusion, Greg says this is one of the coolest Gibson acoustic guitars to come into the store in years. To understand the size, it fits a Baby Collings case.
Choice Mahogany back, sides, and neck. Very nice Sitka Spruce top with traditional sunburst finish. Top and back edge of body are bound with cream bindings, with top edge having multiple lines of purfling inside the binding layer. Multiple cream soundhole rosette purfling. Blackened inside of soundhole. Blackened peghead veneer has Gibson decal logo at top and original truss rod cover just above nut. Possibly original nut. Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard has original frets in great shape and large pearl dot position markers. Cream side dots along bass edge of fingerboard. Original tortoise pickguard. Original Brazilian Rosewood rectangular bridge with cut-through bone saddle and pearl dots. Ebony bridgepins and non-original wooden end pin. No strap button ever installed. Original nickel Kluson Deluxe tuners with cream buttons. D string tuner has bent but fully functional shaft.
This guitar has original lacquer that is robust and in amazing condition. The lacquer shows beautiful character of lacquer checking that is not problematic, but subtle and lovely. The guitar has random touch marks and small dings but nothing major and nothing needs to be repaired. One small J-crack behind peghead at volute area on treble side that never went far enough to cause a hinge. There is no buckling or deformation of the top and the guitar is structurally very sound. One small ding on the neck in a location where it doesn’t interfere with the left hand.
This is ladder braced construction, and has the sound to match. Very enunciated and crisp, with the notes clearly defining themselves. There is lots of character in this guitar’s unique voice. The highs pop out clearly with plenty of sustain.
