This 1987 Martin HD-28 P is a very good, full sounding guitar. The “P” designates “profile”, although this neck has not been flattened on the back like Martin does for their low-profile necks. This neck has a distinct pre-war rounded “V” profile, so maybe the “P” stands for a custom profile.

This guitar has a Brazilian Rosewood peghead overlay with standard Martin decal on top. The tuners are C.F. Martin branded which are likely made by Shaller. Diamond volute on the back of the headstock.

The Mahogany neck is in great shape overall with some small areas of lacquer wear. There are slight signs the neck was reset at some point in the past. No cracks or repairs in the neck. A strap button has been installed on the heel in the correct position. The Gabon ebony fingerboard is in great shape. It has graduated pearl dot inlays. The frets were recently replaced and are in great condition.

The top is made from beautiful high-grade Sitka spruce. There are some wear patterns on the top from thumb and fingerpicks – mostly around the soundhole. There is a new ebony bridge installed. The top shows some areas around the bridge where wood was pulled up during bridge repair. The black plastic pickguard is original. There are some dings and wear in the top, but no cracks.

The back and sides are Indian Rosewood. The bass side shows a repaired crack that is about 6″. The treble side is crack free. There are a few areas around the sides of the guitar where the finish is worn through. There are a few areas of repaired binding, mostly around the shoulder and waist of the back of the guitar.

The top edge of the guitar is bound with cream colored binding with wooden herringbone purfling on the inside of the top edge. The sound hole rosette is concentric circles of stacked white-black-white. The back of the guitar has the wooden “zipper” marquetry back strip. The back of the guitar also has white binding with black-white-black purfling. The white plastic heel cap is missing.

This is a tremendously full sounding guitar. There is also a very nice L.R. Baggs pickup system installed, so it is ready for your next gig.
This guitar was formerly owned by a well-known Montana musician, Alan Lane, who passed several years ago. Alan was loved by many people here in the Northwestern corner of Montana, as a Logger, as a good natured guy, and as a band leader… But perhaps he was even better known as the real good guitar player who only had one hand to use! Alan made more great music with one hand than many do when using two hands…

So – this guitar comes with some good Kharma… It has played the small town bars, roadhouses, mountain weddings, etc

It comes in a good hard-shell case. Call for any other details.
