This 2023 Rickard 12″ open-back banjo is an excellent modern issue of a much older era banjo. Rickard 12-inch Dobson model. This banjo is in exceptional condition, resembling a new instrument.
It has a “paddle” peghead on the Maple neck and simple inlays. The plain Ebony peghead veneer has no logos or brand name. Antique vintage-style 15:1 Rickard tuners, and a Rickard 5-string tuner, all with an attractive antiqued, coppery bronze appearance and black knobs. Bone nut.
The Maple neck is reminiscent of banjos from the 1850s to 1860s, with a generous size, large “boat heel”, and a two-piece Maple construction with ebony stringer down the center. The banjo features a Gabon Ebony fingerboard with medium dot inlays and a single star at the fifth fret. It comes with A, Bb, B, and C railroad spikes installed by House of Fine Instruments. There is an S-curve scallop above the 17th fret.
The maple rim is likely a three-ply tapered rim, mounted with a traditional Dobson tone ring. There are 18 brackets around the 12-inch pot, and the dowel stick bears the serial number 1411.
The banjo has a moon-style bridge, a Rickard Renaissance head, and a wooden armrest with hardware that attaches to the hooks. The bottom of the wood rim is capped with a dark exotic hardwood that resembles Ebony.
