New Blues Hardware FX Mandolin #05

Description

This new Blues Hardware FX #05 mandolin is representative of Tom Sheehy’s innovative designs. The concept begins with a loose interpretation of a traditional “F” mandolin… I’ll explain…
The body looks like an F mandolin at a quick glance. But there is only one triangular point along the sides, instead of 2 (or even 3). The “scroll” is basically in the same place as a traditional curling F mandolin scroll but upon inspection you realize it is a bulging hollow chamber with decorative wood inset cover(see photos).
Also, the peghead is more like an “A” model paddle shape but with deep “Vee” cut into the top of peghead.

Now, with all of this said, let me explain the innovative “sound port”. This instrument has a single Sound Port on the bass side, instead of “f” hole on either side. This sound port is a 3-D set of french curves that has the distinction of rising into the air at the lip (see photos). It is not only a clever building technique, but it is also exploring the theory of the use of French curves in f-holes. Stylistically it looks very cool.

Maple back, sides and neck; Idaho Cedar top; Rosewood Fingerboard and Bridge; Walnut fittings; Handmade pickguard, bridge, armrest; 0ne-pc tailpiece.

This is a well-made mandolin built here in Missoula. It sounds very articulate. You can’t help but be impressed by Tom’s innovations and designs.
