This new Collings D-1 Custom has been a much anticipated guitar arrival for us. We’ve recently received a new Collings 00-1 custom made with this same old growth Sitka. The 00-1 arrived and barely needed to be played before it opened up fast and deep. So, naturally we wanted to hear what this old “ancient” Sitka would do to the attack and tone of a Mahogany Dreadnaught like this D-1.
As expected, this new Collings D-1 Custom sounds “older” and more mature than models with normal Sitka Spruce tops. And it only adds 8%-9% more for this great old seasoned wood.
This is a typical “D-18” style guitar, with high grade Mahogany back, sides and neck; Old Growth Sitka Spruce w/ Adirondack Red Spruce advanced scalloped braces; Ebony fingerboard, bridge and pins.
Graduated pearl dot inlays in fingerboard.
The neck profile is typical Collings D-1 neck which already has a great vintage “feel” to it without being a designated vintage neck.
Nickel Waverly pre-war style open back tuners (made in Montana).
Excellent sound, excellent set-up.
Comes with high grade TKL hard case with real velvet interior.
