Description
Exc(+) condition / “S”-holes
SN# 0202 / 1-3/32″ Width at nut.
One-Piece Top / One-Piece Back
This is a great F-5 from Mr Gilchrist. It was custom ordered with some nice options that should be mentioned up front:
One-pc Red Maple Back.
One-pc European Spruce Top.
S-holes (like “f” holes, but with no “v” notches in the center).
Fingerboard cut square and bound just past 20th fret.
Waverly tuners.
Abbreviated Pickguard.
Flowerpot Inlay.
Multiple bindings – Ivoroid w/ black line seen on top, back and sides of body.
This is an exceptional sounding mandolin. It will make you challenge anyone to a duel who puts down x-braced Gilchrist 5’s in favor of tone bars.
What a wonderful attack and tonal beauty from this mandolin. Has ability to whisper with subtle nuance, or to command the room with power.
Very high grade figured Maple back, sides and neck. Very nice Spruce top, as well. The top is listed as “European” Spruce, but a little hard to tell. Often, the “European” and “German” Spruce description means that the violin shops in Europe have deemed that their Englemann Spruce, Italian Spruce, German Spruce, etc., is “graded” as highest grades for top instruments.
In the past history of “German” Spruce, many times it meant Englemann Spruce from the Northwest U.S. has been “graded” and the higher grades selected for instruments.
Multiple bound headstock with Gilchrist logo inlaid at top of Ebony peghead overlay. Single Ivoroid bound Flat Ebony fingerboard with pearl dot inlays.
Ebony 2-pc Loar style adjustable bridge. Abbreviated Tortoise pickguard with Multiple Ivoroid bindings. Silver plated 2-pc tailpiece with Gilchrist logo engraved in lid.
Neck profile is a rounded Vee shape with “speed neck”.
Waverly tuners with matching Ivoroid buttons.
Comes with delightful tonal experience and rectangular hard case.
This mandolin has slight signs of playing wear and handling. There are some finish chips at the back of peghead at the top edge. Light finish marring on the back in one small area.
The build sheet says Mr. Gilchrist changed the fingerboard on this mandolin. There are a few very light signs of finish chips right where fingerboard side binding meets the neck heel.
This is a wonderful mandolin that plays great and sounds great.
Frets have recent professional work and show no signs of wear!
Comes with original rectangular hard case.
