Description
SN# 79176. 1 1/16″ width at nut.
Exc.(+) Condition. This is a fine example of the fairly rare Gibson A2Z model produced under Lloyd Loar’s tenure. Blonde top with brown back and sides, mahogany neck. “Snakehead” peghead with The Gibson script logo at top, and original truss rod cover near nut. Tuners are pretty rare, Loar-style silver-plated 4-on-a-plate tuners with solid pearl buttons. All original screws and grommets for the tuners. Possibly original nut. Flat ebony fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. Original tortoise plate pickguard in wonderful condition with no deterioration from glue residue. Original side mount piece is intact in great shape. Original patent 1921 ebony adjustable 2-pc. bridge. Original 2-pc. tailpiece with The Gibson engraved in cover. Body has wood and Ivoroid binding on top edge, single Ivoroid on back, and along fingerboard. Soundhole is bound inside with Ivoroid, and multiple wood concentric purflings for the rosette.
The neck is in wonderful condition, and needs nothing. Frets are great with barely any hint of being played on. Back of neck profile is a very desirable rounded “V” that does not seem bulky – it’s very elegant and ergonomic. Some slight player wear on mandolin, some slight dings here and there, nothing major. There is one long crack not quite parallel to center seam that has been repaired. Center seam shows evidence of partially being open at one time. Comes with original case in very nice shape.
