1-1/8″ width at nut / Italian Spruce Top
Radiused Fingerboard & Bridge
This 2025 Northfield A-Model Special has been played but not mistreated. No fret wear! It only has one small soft scratch on the top that is not glaringly obvious, otherwise it could be described as “near mint”. The real name for this model is, “NFMSP-A5”. I’m sure the “Special” is designated because of the intense Maple figure and the multiple bindings all over.
At this early stage in describing this mandolin, let me state that it has tremendous sound: Very strong projection; balanced; great chop. It’s tone rivals much more expensive mandolins…
Beautifully figured Maple back, sides and neck with Italian Spruce top.
The mandolin is fully multiple bound, with the accent lines showing on all quarters.
The Ebony peghead veneer shows multiple ivoroid/black/white bindings with the accent lines seen on the sides and from the top. The neck is two-pc Maple with Rosewood stringer down the middle of the back. The back of neck shows strong flame figure and has a rounded “V” profile. Northfield pearl script logo inlaid at top with truss rod access below, above the bone nut. The fingerboard appears to be undyed Ebony. The F.B. is also multiple bound from above and from the side. The F.B. culminates in a truncated extension that also has the last frets (21, 22, 23), scalloped so your pick can more easily work in the sweet spot without so much clicking. Graduated Pearl dot inlays. Multiple bound heel cap.
The body is very beautiful with a brown/amber stain under the lovely thin finish. Abbreviated pickguard, multiple bound. Two-pc radiused Ebony intonated “Loar style” adjustable bridge. Simple efficient design stainless(?) tailpiece. The Italian Spruce top shows good grain structure. Back and sides are vividly flame figured. The back has a nice chevron book match.
Like I mentioned before, this mandolin sounds above its station. And… it comes with its original hard case.
Right now the discounted new price for this model is $3995. This one is priced at $3250 and only has one light top scratch…
